timing out.....Peugeot 406 - foxy406t
Gone to change to cambelt on my 406 petrol turbo and the timing marks dont line up. Locking pin in the top pulley and the crank pulley is around 25 degrees out.
The engine runs fine and always has done, what on earth could this be?
Also having problems getting the aux bottom pulley off, any tips?

Foxy, I wouldn't remove anything until you have established exactly what is going on here otherwise you might end up with a knackered engine. Are you sure you dont need to rotate the engine again so they line up? Very easy mistake to make with catastrophic results......

Cambelt was last changed at 59k its on 107k....
The engine runs fine, we wound the crank round many times to try and match up the holes but no joy. Not touching the cambelt at the mo now, just changing the cam and top mount.

as foxy said, the belt is still on the engine so no damage and the car runs fine always has. but when you line the crankshaft up with the timing hole the camshaft hole is about 25 degrees out. if you then rotate the engine again the camshaft is still out so id estimate about 5 to 6 teeth out. plan i think is to markt he crankshaft pulley in relation to the block, then remove belt put both crank and cam on the timing marks then turn it over by hand with a ratchet and see if there's any contact at all, problem is can't understand why it doesn't line up in the first place

I see what you're saying Chris. The only point I was making was that if foxy removed the belt all reference points could be lost and therefore the potential was there to refit a new belt with the timing set up out of sync, therefore causing engine damage. I agree with you that it is confusing why the marks dont line up now. Sounds like someone has been having a fiddle with it in the past maybe?!?

well his service history shows the waterpump and tensioners were done but no belt. it makes no sense as if it were that many teeth out then it would have eaten itself by now.

only way forward i see is, lock the cam by pin on it's marking then do crankshaft pulley by marking block and pulley then see what happens

Never had one of these models, but speaking generally could the camshaft pulley have been refitted back to front at some time to cause this effect.

When I changed the belt on the Hyundai I similarly couldn't line the marks up, Mr. Tippex helped me out though( engine ran well before and after)

The crankshaft pulley is made in two halves, and has slipped over time, hence the outer ring (where the timing slot is) is no longer in the correct orientation relative to the centre ring (where the keyway is). What you will need to do is remove the pulley, then mark two teeth on the belt and the tooth on the crank and cam sprockets between the marks - identify them as cam and crank too. Now remove the belt, and transfer the marks to the new belt - carefully - count the teeth in each section at least twice! Fit the new belt, and make sure you turn the engine over several times, and that the marks still line up, before attempting to start it.

Have a look here www.aussiefrogs.com/shane and follow the links to Xantia VSX cambelt and you will see the exact problem you are having. Watch out for the hose in last picture!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Agree 100%. The later PSA IDI diesels were made with the crank locking hole in the flywheel to obviate this problem.

The only things I would add are - check the water pump very carefully (cheap enough to replace) and change the offending pulley. The rubber inside, which is the engine torsional vibration damper, is breaking up. Refit the crank pulley bolt with thread locking compound and tighten as detailed by PSA.
