Choosing the make of a new car - L'escargot
How much does the closeness of a dealer to your house influence your choice of the make when buying a new car? When you live in the sticks, as I do, I consider it to be an important factor.

If you bought a reliable car, you'd only see the dealer once a year for the annual service, so it doesn't matter how far away they are.

There was Ford, Vauxhall and Rover main dealers in my small town until a few years ago.
They were all closed when main dealerships were closed apart from large towns.
Yes they did make a difference to me as the furthest was only half a mile away.
The nearest are now 20 mile away.
It must have been important to others in my town as the vast majority of cars were from the above marques.

No BUT

It does knock things off the list. Nicole fancies a new grande punto, and I have to say they are a nice car. Its firmly off the list tho as the nearest Fiat dealer is miles away, the chances of that one being rubbish are very high, so to find a good dealer could be a major treasure hunt.

You just dont need that hastle

Very valid point - I'd need a Fiat dealer in my front garden before I bought one!

I would not even factor in my decision.

If I was buying a new or nearly new car, decent cars these days need servicing once a year at the very most. Ok, so once a year I might have to make a long trip to a dealer. I can handle that, it's not a big enough deal to affect my choice of car.

If I was buying a used car, it isnt' going anywhere near the dealer anyway.

A Lexus owner that I know decided since the nearest Lexus dealer to his new home was 200 miles away, he would get rid of the Lexus and get a Toyota. 100 miles would have been reasonable, 200 was not.

Presumably in the out reaches of Scotland (dealers listed for Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen) or abroad - even so you'd be hard pushed to find the nearest Lexus dealership in the UK was 200 miles away.

Yup. As per my profile - and this gent lives 4 miles beyond me!

When I had company cars I had seven big Renaults in a row. All were very reliable over huge mileages - because I had them serviced at an exceptionally good dealer (Cross Roads Garage in Oxfordshire) which was 50 miles from home but worth it every time.

my ex-wife had an Alfa Romeo (156Ti) when the model was new....... we drove to Devon in it (near Plymouth) and i realised the headlamp bulb had blown........ nearest garage to buy that type of bulb was Truro in Cornwall or Dorset, both well over 100 miles away....

that would definitely affect my decison making process........ what do you do for servicing if you want main dealer input?

i realise huge chunks of Scotland have to make do........ but it wouldn't be for me.

The location of the dealer would probably be the most unimportant factor in my decision.

But then again, I never will, and Mum and Dad never have taken new cars to the dealer to get serviced so assuming I'd need a dealer only part once every year, I'd still be pretty safe.

I'm fortunate to have just about every dealer within say 5 miles for the mainstream stuff (even a Llamborghini dealer - drool) so it's not an issue - dealer visits are more of an issue:-

We have two Toyota dealers within easy reach for my wife's car - hardly ever go, and a Nissan dealer for me - again I'm not a regular visitor.

I was at the Alfa dealer far too often with my Alfa 147 Selespeed (company car) - opposite the Nissan dealer I now use with my current car occasionally.

Vauxhall - dealers vary massively - local was rubbish, but the one near work was excellent.

I base choice on reliability (Alfa excluded, but I needed to do it (like you do !) as it wasn't mine) - I need a car to work all of the time. I don't want unscheduled stops that result in the car off the road !

Sorry it's not a Welsh Llamborghini honnest - too many key presses !

When I got my Skoda on a 4 year company lease there was a Skoda dealer where I lived. It changed franchise shortly afterwards and there's not one near where I work. I then moved house to somewhere else without a Skoda dealer and taking it to be serviced twice a year was hassle. However since the 3 year warranty has expired the lease company have had it serviced at a SEAT dealer about 10 miles away which picks the car up.
As it's time to choose a replacement, the location of servicing dealers is playing a part in the considerations.
