Want to sell year old Astra - best way? - maff257
I own a year old 05 55 Astra 1.8 Design 5dr and would like to sell it as I haven't been offered enough in part exchange. I am a little concerned about advertising in Auto Trader etc because the car isn't that old and is worth about £9500 if I sell privately. I guess I'm just worried that some scam artist will run off with my car. Does anyone have any tips of how best to sell a car of this age and get the best return?

Many thanks

Matthew

May I ask why you are selling?

I sold a £12K car on autotrader no problem, took a bankers draft for payment, rang the bank to ensure it was real.

OP: If this is the same Astra you referred to in your previous threads about clutch judder and getting compensation from Vauxhaul, might it not be wiser trade the car in?

Were you to sell the car knowing that there had been issues with it, its my understanding that the buyer would have redress from you - whereas if you trade it in, those issues become the dealer's concern. That, after all, is part of their business - and a Vauxhaul dealer ought to get more assistance from the manufacturer than you or I would.

I stand ready to be corrected on any or all of these points, however!

IIRC, the compensation you got took the form of a discout off a Network Q used car. Say you fancied a Ford instead. Why not consider trading in against a Focus - ideally with as low a cost to change as possible - which, when the time comes, you replace with a new Ford. That way the cost to change is minimised, the dealer who sold you the Astra in the first place has any future headache that arises with it, and you should get a better trade in next time around because you'd be changing for the same marque.

That's along the lines of the approach Gromit Snr. took when his Rover failed him once too often, and it worked out well for him.

It's not the car I got compensation on but the one I bought using the compensation! I have been offered £8300 to £8500 for trading in against a Focus but if I sold privately I could get over £9000. I can't really afford to trade in with those values.

Sounds like you need to make yer mind up! Yes, circumstances do change, but through our lives, before marriage and through 26 years of it and raising a small family we have bought and stayed with most cars, mainly older, but not all and have let dealers have 'none of it'. Just run them into the ground. Cannot recall ANY major hurdles. B.T.T.B. means **something** to the badge. Stick with that idea. It is only a means to get from A to B. Spend the saving on something better unless of course you have disposable dough.
