If you take the Farnham Road out of Guildford at the top lay-by before you exit on to the Hogsback you will find an abandoned and soon to be disposed of vehicle.
It is an E reg Isuzu Trooper. Good tyres. Looks solid. No rust. Interior sound. Exhaust looks fine. Yes I do have too much time on my hands at the moment.
Now I have used these vehicles in Africa and had the use of one on the Hesketh estate many moons ago and they are tough and good tow vehicles.
OK so something major engine wise may have gone wrong but it had to be driven to where it was abandoned at least. Is such a car really worth so little as to be abandoned under current market conditions?
|
It has probably been stolen.
|
Nope. All marked up 'police aware' and orange ticketed for removal as an abandoned vehicle in 3 days time.

Nearly all scrap dealers charge to dispose of cars now. I suppose some people don't want the hastle of trying to sell a poor condition car to someone, with it sitting on their drive for months at a time. I used to live in Leicester and we had many abondened cars outside of our house. People used to nock the door, ask if I owned it, how long it had been there etc. Couple of hours later they would tow it away. I was quite grateful for that, much quicker than the council!

Witt he price of steel high, I think you can get cars taken away for free again by car scrappers. We had our sons Citroen AX taken away no problem - and that has plastic body panels too. Anyone in the manchester area, I can probably dig out the number.
|
Guildford Borough Council has a deal with some scrappers over in Camberley that cars can be scrapped for free and in my experience they were very keen.
From the phone call to them removing a car for me took 30 minutes.
No need to abandon a vehicle in this area except through laziness/stupidity.
But thats beside my point really. Surely a vehicle as capable of this is worth something? Cheap horse box puller?
|
I recently had a car picked up for free, after I had stripped everything of value, the price of steel makes it worth their while these days, and they came round within an hour of my call!
The car could have been stolen, and the owner has been informed / is arranging recovery.

>'No need to abandon a vehicle in this area except through laziness/stupidity'. - Exactly.
Therefore would you want to take this veichle from someone who would just dump it. Probably never looked after it properly in the first place. By all means If I was after something like that I would be inclined to take it (If I knew it wasn't stolen). But it would probably need a lot of work doing to it. Easier to buy one in much better condition. One with tax and MOT on auto trader for £500.

Nearly all scrap dealers charge
They were paying £50.00 a motor around here not that long ago.

Same in Northampton Thommo. Got a few quid from the scrappy for our BX, admittedly it was still driveable though £1k needed to get through next MoT.

Probably be worth a small fortune in ten years...
Have you seen the 1978 Citroen CX on Autotrader for....
..wait for it....
£3500 !!!!

In my local paper in the north east of England there are classifed ads every night of the week from at least five scrap dealers paying up to £70 for old bangers (If you deliver them to their yards). They will also take cars away for free seven days a week and when I recently scraped my old Escort I rang a dealer up and could book a time and day for collection. Scrap cars are certainly in demand in my neck of the woods and I assume its down to China and its demand for steel driving up prices. I have watched the ads over the past year to eighteen months and the offers have gone up from £20 a car to £70 a car over that time
|
In France they just turn them into garden ornaments - maybe I'll get round to taking a few amusing photos some time...
|
I see a lot of scrap old cars in everyday use here but I was absolutely gobsmacked the other day when I saw what my plumber was driving. The biggest wreck I have ever seen outside of a scrappie, an old Polski Fiat held together by rope and electrical tape. You'll think I'm exaggerating but it wasn't in much better condition than that Toyota pickup they destroyed on Top Gear - without the fire damage. I walked around it with my mouth open about three times thinking "what the hell...?"
|
I have heard an advert on the radio fronted by Quentin Willson giving a national freephone number and website to arrange for your car to be uplifted free of charge. I will listen out for the exact details next time.

all the scrap is going to china the price has never been so high, any rag/n/boneman that dont give you a free balloon or a plate is ripping you to be honest,up here int cold north my end of life centre is paying between £45/£70 a ton with all the fluids still in the vehicle, alloy is also doing nicely and the last time i asked the price of copper had gone balistic..............
theres good money in scrap at the moment but the day china says no more then expect a big big recession...........
|
Do they ship the cars out there as they are or are they melted down first? I assume they must have seats etc removed and are crushed into a container?
|
At the place i use he has his own baling machine, first all fluids are removed, then wheels then engine/gearbox is ripped out and then the shell with all seats and glass is cubed,it then goes to another larger place and here the cubes are shredded in a massive machine and then they go on the train to the docks
(as far as i am aware anyway)

I'm not sure what our local scrap dealer is offering at the moment but it can't be all bad. I've noticed a steady stream of cars on the back of trailers and lorries going his way lately.
I've also noticed an absence of scrap cars on the roads, plus ads for free cars with 6 months MOT. The lad who lined my chimney the other week was surprised I bothered collecting together all the ferrous and non ferrous waste from my house and other peoples to take to the yard less than a mile away. I don't get a lot but it can be as much as £100 a time.
Mind you, the price of copper pipes at the moment is rediculous.
