I know that Renault auto gearboxes have had a variable reputation in the past but I'm looking at a 2006 model. Are the problems dead and buried?

What, a Vel Satis or a Clio?

Megane and V-S

I think it depends on the choice of car and engine,

But you wont get a 2006 VS unless it has been in a field for two plus years!

Bye the very nature of your question its too early to say.
Having been badly 'bitten' before I'm going to avoid Renault autos forever.

I have a 2005 Megane ST auto it does ok though it can get confused and takes time to change also it can be a bit clunky on changing. Has the manual shift tiptronic thing, never use it cant see the point of an auto with this feature just select D and go.

Mate of mine has a new Megane CC 2.0 Auto and generally it was smooth and quiet but some of its "decision making" was a bit odd. Occasional holding of gears for no sensible reason.
