triumph gt6 mk 3 a good classic to buy? - finlay howcroft
I have been thinking of buying a "classic" car and have been thinking of a mk3 Triumph Gt6 as I already have several Truimph Spitfire 1500's has anyone any opinions.

Beautiful engine. Smooth as silk and good power to weight ratio. Last forever. Best "old" BMC engine in my opinion. From memory overdrive works on 3rd and 4th. possibly also on 2nd but can't remember. Obviously watch for rust, but good classic and better than the TR6 with it's dreadful Lucas injection. Good luck.

Agree with most of what Richard says, but he insults the good name of Triumph by referring to the engine as "BMC". The design of this engine long precedes the BMC incorporation (i.e. ruination) of Triumph!

I don't know the GT6 that well but believe that the Mk3 was a bit less 'skittish' than the earlier ones. I should say that it still needs care to stop the rear end overtaking you! The separate chassis is probably the vital thing to look at in fine detail when buying.

The Lucas injection system used on some of the larger Triumphs was prone to problems - I got rid of mine on the 2.5PI in 1975/6 - but I hear that the enthusiasts have now got it all licked.

Finlay, I've just noticed that you already have some 1500s so you will know what to look at when buying.

You could fit a 2.5PI engine in a GT6 if you really want to fly! Not sure if the fuel injection equipment would fit though. The 2500TC engine fits but only with a Triumph 2000 intake manifold which is rather inefficient in gas flow.

Triple Webers were better than the Strombergs or the P.I.
