hi all
my wifes fiat brava started off having a noisy rattling 3rd gear , its now all the gears and even on tick-over, its deafening but when you put the clutch down the noise stops,
put it in gear clutch up = very loud rattling
so whats causing this then ?

My guess would be worn input shaft bearings in the gearbox, or a low oil level.
Is it the 1.2 80SX model by any chance?

As it was mentioned 3rd gear to start,would count out input shaft bearing,Low gearbox oil is poss but would think damage done now,but if layshaft bearings severly worn, layshaft will be jumping about on bearings- hence bad noise

sounds like gearbox problem.possibly layshaft bearings badly worn,just my thoughts?

I dont know about you but from my 30so years in the garage trade sounds like your thrust bearing is on its lasts legs so I suggest a quick trip to your local garage and show them[megrandad] however when you are driving along and it crunches going int a specific gear then gear syncro fault is evident and to do just one sybchro assembly is about £300 to £400 trust me I have just done one for a customer[megrandad]
