Some neighbours of mine - both JPs - have two vehicles with illegal spacing on their number plates, e.g. J11AB C . I remarked to the husband that his plates were illegal, and his wife stopped me today to aver that they were perfectly legal. Her magistrate colleagues had confirmed this.
Where can I find a site that gives examples of incorrect spacing that will print out properly? I tried UK Speedtraps but the pages won't print properly .

People who administer the law should comply with it. What is their position, if dealing with a case of illegally spaced number plate letters, their vehicle is parked outside the court with the same problem. Get it sorted or resign - if anybody really cares! There are worse things going on than magistrates poncing with silly number plates!

I know I've said this on here before but I knew the chairman of the bench in a well-known southern cathedral city who had a Range Rover with an illegally spaced plate that advertised his company name. It still seems an abuse to me when otherwise innocent people are being nicked by the over-zealous Old Bill for trying to give the rest of us a smile.

I saw black a Porsche 911 that had illegal silver on black reg plates - it was much younger than the cut-off age for such plates. I suppose using distinctive plates make a car more recogniseable, so the users are unwittingly playing into the hands of the law anyway.

That's exactly what a traffic officer told me - he told me people are much more likely to remember a plate that says something, and the Police can easily work it out.

I was a car/pickup a few months back with such a blatant disregard for font and spacing I reported it. He'd also luckily advertised the gym he owned near Oldham. Got a polite thank you email from DVLA and had a photo if need be.

If you can decipher the number plate then so can the police / authorities (who sell these plates knowing they will be altered to suit a different purpose than intended)

I'd like to see someone decipher a plate I saw this morning ~ J[ ]HNM. I don't know what the [ ] was supposed to be. It was like an 0 in which the middle part at top and bottom had been erased. I got up close when the car stopped in front of me but I couldn't see any evidence of yellow tape etc.

Possibly 11, with the 1's curved inwards at the top. I've seen that trick elsewhere. But it's ridiculous to have one that needs misrepresenting to that extent.
I have a personal plate, but I made sure it didn't need any jiggery-pokery to work.

I wondered about that, but the vertical lines were curved inwards at both top and bottom. J11 HNM was certainly issued ~ in 1991 by Bedfordshire CC. Jiggery pokery nevertheless.

Depending on what software you have and your PC expertise, you can print a copy of what is currently showing on any PC screen, just by capturing it, pasting it into an art package, then printing from that.
Pressing the 'print Screen' button will capture the screen.

My home is my castle, when I shut the door I want my privacy. Cold callers, salesmen, god botherers and all get a frosty greeting should they knock my door. Should some busy-body post anything through my letterbox under the cover of darkness or on the sly it goes in the bin. Informing me as I go about my daily business is another matter.
If this is the most important thing in your lives then report the matter to the serious crime squad!

Dox I agree with your comments and how important this subject is not, but..........
the principle is very important.
If the people who sit in judgement on others are openly breaking the law, (any) then they should be removed from office if they are not prepared to correct the error of their ways.
They may not be aware its illegal for us mere taxpayers. (Unlikely, because somebody had to make them and should have advised them)
Or they may be blatantly disregarding the law (how dare they judge on others for any law if so?)
The main reason number plates are supposed to be of a specific font/size colour std etc is for the increasing number of cameras for speeding, tax evasion, and other big brother uses. If they are avoiding the possibility of being caught for such purposes then they are possibly guilty of even more serious offences that they are not going to be pulled up for.

OP states miss spaced, not altered into something else entirelly. Are the camera opperators that dim as to be unable to correctly identify the miss spaced plates..... I doubt it

I see your point Dox but you're missing it in this instance. In their positions, they should know and at least be driving round on legal plates.
Robbie (who is an absolute gent by the way) is really doing them a favour. If it was anyone else, in different circumstances then I'd agree with you a little more.

That's why ANPR squads target bad plates. Apparant;y they score a "hit" by misreading and are then dealt with by means of "driver education" in the shape of a FPN

In any case, I have had so many conversations with them regarding the plates so do you really think they would not know who posted it.

I'm amazed at the assumptions made by Dox and how he/she has interpreted my post. It's above so you don't have to scroll back.
I have known my JP neighbours for over twenty years and we meet regularly on our dog walks. I've no intention of being secretive about this and I only made the comment in passing as he's a JP and I ribbed him for breaking the law. His wife stopped me and argued that the plates are perfectly legal. so I wish to prove to her that they are not.

And if he is unaware he is breaking the law , why is he unaware? The people who made the plates must have been asked specifically to make them with different spacings, and should have advised him they are not legal for road use. If they made them without advising him, or even without keeping records or without him/her signing a disclaimer then they could conceivably be fined by the very same JP for breaking the laws too!
Their name and postcode should be on the plates by law too btw!

i think if you told any legitimate no. plate maker that info then trading standards would be at that market being very interested and hotly pursued by the people who have to fill in forms and jump through hoops before they can make a plate.
My local factor who only does plates for convenience of regulars rather than for big profit (he says he would love to say he didnt do number plates) has had 3 legal visits in last 12 months and he stays very legal with a take it or leave attitude. He would be fuming and physically dragging trading standards to the market if he knew!

I saw an Evo this afternoon with the numbers 11 at a jaunty angle to make up the V in EVO. He shot off round a roundabout, tyres screeching and engine roaring. Wow - a real little hero with a baseball cap! Would our JPs really want to classed alongside him?

Last time I was at Donnington market they were there (travellers and therefore not tracable?), who takes a logbook to a market? Stupid law anyway (having to produce a logbook that is), a theif armed with a screwdriver can get 10 pairs of plates in 10 minutes from cars parked in the street.

Now here's an interesting twist...
Having illegally-spaced numberplates will fail the MOT.
It is a condition of insurance that you keep your car in a roadworthy condition - presumably that means able to pass the MOT at any time.
So ... if people with illegally-spaced number plates had an accident, the insurance company could surely refuse to pay out.
As the insurance companies are always on the lookout for a way to save paying out on claims, I'm surprised that they have not yet latched on to this one!!!

KenA you are right that plates must be legal to pass the MOT, SFAIK. But illegal plates do not make the car unroadworthy - just illegal.

I have seen I5LAM in Arabic font, Asiya X, FATIMA, JOTI P, DHILLION, P3TEL, and even a number plate in Arabic script. if you got hit or someone was injured how are you going to report this? Sorry, I could not read the plate and the driver had a veil so I cant identify them. They don't get pulled but I get pulled for having an ever so slightly dirty number plate! Perfectly legible, correct font. I have seen cars with no number plates or on the dashboard!
