what are the auto bmw like. looking at one from around the mid 90's. are the automatic boxes pretty strong and and last?. If they are to go , what would it cost to get done? also with autos is there anything obvious to look out for?

i see in your other thread you are asking about auctions......
word of advice most faulty auto"s go to auctions to die ...
ive both bought and sold bad auto"s in these places and unless its really worth a lot (the car) then you have really bought a pile of scrap.
A mid 90"s car of any description is 10+ years old and is therefore more than likely to be reaching its end of life ,nobody can enter this type of car into an auction and guarantee the box they might like to try with bits of paper and photocopied invoices by some unknown gearbox specialist but they arent worth a jot.
If you must buy auto buy private (cheapest but no guarantee if box was waddled to give it a bit of life) or trade with a proper guarantee with the small bits having been read

Just sold mine last week.
1994 320 coupe auto with 114,000 miles. Had it from 40,000, still drove perfectly, if a little underpowered.
Changed it for an E46 325Ci.
