Check around the engine for dislodged / split vacuum and crankcase ventilation pipes.

Thanks for your speedy reply Peter D.
Can you tell me please where the idle control servo motor is located on the engine and how can I test it ?
|
my monies on dox with your symptoms, but you dont need to thank us ;) ..........
hello dox :-)
|
The idle valve will be part of the throttle body.
Hello Oldman, hope you're well ;-)

Thank-you all, for your advice.
I will have a good look round the beast tomorrow.

If there's a round breather on top of the cam cover gently rock it with the engine running. Emulsified oil rots them out. About a £5 from VW ;-)

I have inspected all of the vacuum hoses and crankcase ventilation hoses for cracks etc, also inspected the breather and still no joy. By the way I can't find an idle control valve on the throttle assembly - or else it looks nothing like the one in my Haynes manual.
Any further ideas as to what could be causing this fault would be greatly appreciated.

Can you post a photo of the engine bay? What years the car? Check the wiring to the switch/es to the throttle body.

Sorry I don't have a digital camera. The car is a 1996 1.6CL and the engine type is AEE.
|
Can anybody please recommend an alternative to the Haynes manual for MK 3 Golfs ???
As I am rapidly finding that they do not provide enough detail on the cars e.g. different fuel injection systems, wiring diagrams etc.
|
just been looking into the history of the mk3 golf with the help of autodata and am amazed at so many alterations in the engine types no wonder haynes aint much help.....
oh and i cant find a reference to AEE?
|
The engine is an "AEE", which is just about the one thing that is mentioned in the Haynes manual. Having talked to a colleague at work who has had a similar problem on a 1.4 Mk3, he recommended taking the throttle assembly out and giving it a really good clean as this course of action sorted his car out. The "new hobby " continues...

Ladies / Gents,
Success !!! The throttle body was black inside and the small orifice at the bottom of the assembly was almost completely blocked. Once I had cleaned it up and refitted it, it started and idled fine.
My wife has driven the car on short runs for over a couple of years, so that probably hasn't helped things.
Thank-you all for your advice and suggestions. It is certainly one for me to remember !

it, it started and idled fine. My wife has driven the car on short runs for over a couple of years, so that probably hasn't helped things.
That certainly won't have helped, my last car had a bit of trouble stalling at idle when I first got it, thats why it was cheap. I bought intending to fix it, possible rebuild the carb. It was an auto and the first auto I've ever driven.
On the motorway bringing it home I discovered the kick down feature of the autobox and used it at every oportunity, so if repetedly went to 5500rpm whilst overtaking.
Got off the motorway and drove back through town and it didn't stall once, and never had any trouble idleing after that.
