VW Golf 1989 MK2 1.3L .
It usually starts fine but every now and again (a few weeks) is is "dead" when I turn the key.
It will sometimes start later or with a push, battery/starter connections have been cleaned.
I suspect the starter solonoid as the starter motor seems quite lively.
Can the solonoid be replaced seperately?
Any other ideas?

Have you checked the earth strap is clean and secure? There's a bolt under the battery to earth the body and from there it goes to a bolt on the gearbox bellhousing (often not replaced after a clutch change)
