A strange noise has recently become noticeable under acceleration on my Seat Leon 1.9tdi (90bhp) ('51plate).
Basically at around about the 1.5k-2k revs mark there is a noise from the accelerator that sounds like 'interference'. It sounds like something electronic ? almost like two electric wires a being placed together or the ?interference? from a radio. I honestly can?t really explain what it sounds like any better than that.
I can drown it out by turning the stereo up but even then I can hear it in the background.
It doesn?t just occur when the revs reach the above level ? I can be driving along without the noise, then when the car reaches an incline it will start. Almost as if once the engine works harder, the noise starts.
The noise didn?t occur before I had the cam-belt and water pump changed 10 days ago. Would this have anything to do with it?
The car is under a warranty (as I brought it 2nd hand recently) but the garage doesn?t seem to know what it is.
Any help or advice as to what to look at would be gratefully received.

If so I would assume that the problem was caused by the garage that did the cambelt etc take it back to them.
The car is under a warranty (as I brought it 2nd hand recently) but the garage doesn?t seem to know what it is.
Is this the same garage that did the recent work?
Is the performance / economy normal?
|
Performance / economy seem normal although as I've only had the car a few weeks it's difficult to tell - I'm certainly getting around 55mpg so have no complaints in that regard.
The cam-belt was changed at a different garage (an independent) due to cost - although I supplied the (official VAG) parts so know these to be correct.
The car was purchased from a Honda dealership and comes with a years warranty.
|
You may have supplied the parts but how did they set the tension???
|
So you think it could be a problem with the pre-tensioners etc - the supplied parts included the entire cam-belt kit (including pre-tensioners etc).
I'll take it back to the garage that did the cambelt work and ask if they know what the problem could be - they're an established local business who I've use for years with my other cars...
(PS: username changed as other was deemed 'offensive' - sincerest apologies if I offended anyone).

Just took it to the garage that did the cambelt change. We went for a test drive and he was genuinely confused. I agree with him when he says that it seems to be coming from inside the car and isn't mechanical / coming from under the bonnet.
He had a look under the bonnet whilst I revved it and said that if it were the cambelt / pretensioners it would do it whenever it was revved (even in neutral) not just when it was moving or at a certain revs.
I've taken it into the local Honda dealer (whom cover it under warranty) and must say that they were extremely helpful. They've booked it in for Friday lunchtime so that I can take it out with someone.
If it were something electrical, I would assume there would be warning light etc and as it doesn't appear to be mechanical, I'm assuming it could be a clip or part of loose body trim vibrating when the engine works hardest.
I'll keep you posted with what they say, and thanks for all your help so far.

umm...the Honda dealership (whom provide the warranty) said they have no idea and to take it SEAT.
SEAT had it for a day and said that they couldn't replicate the noise on the ramps (it only makes the noise when moving) so had no idea what it was. They said that in their opinion it was air but that they had no clue as to where it was coming from.
The recommended I let the problem develop but I'm not sure that's so wise.
Anyone any idea's?
I'm going to try and take it to a VAG specialist next week...
|
By air, do you mean turbo boost leakage? Anyone near you with a rolling road?
|
It could be that. I've often wondered about whether it was the turbo as it seems to be when the engine is working hardest.
.... noone near me that I know of that has a rolling road (Kettering)...

I gather you've only had the car for a few weeks. If so, then I'd go back for a refund, return the car ASAP. Otherwise., you'll be stuck trying to get the thing fixed, it sounds like a fault which will be difficult to sort out and will casue you grief.
|
Both of the above garages are near me (I work in Northampton & will call them tomorrow).
The car has a years warranty and is otherwise faultless. If / when I get a diagnosis then I will take the car back to the dealership ASAP and ask them to repair it under warranty.
Thanks for all your help. I'll let you know what they say.
|
Speak to your garage and ask them to pay for the RR time, they might have an account with their own source. They can't find the fault and the car won't build boost whilst stationary. Good luck ;-)
|
It's booked in with Jamsport in two weeks (I'm on holiday next week).
I rang the dealer and said that as they couldn't find the fault and I'd given them ample opportunity and that I expected them to pay for it. They said that if I send them the invoice they can make a claim against the warranty for me (dependent on what is diagnosed of course). I'm guessing they'll reject the claim but I've decided I want the car so need to get it fixed one way or another.
Thanks for all your help.

hi (again)
I spoke to someone who had a similar problem on a Saab. They said that it was eventually diagnosed as a wastegate valve for the turbo.
Would this be a likely cause of the above (I'm not overly mechanically minded.....) - just so I could point people in the right direction?
Cheers

I had a very similar problem with my Octavia (same oily bits) that no on could work out what it was. I found the problem myself, it was actually the exhaust!. There is a centre mounting point under the car near where the handbrake lever is. Its on top of a bolted on crossmember. the exhaust pipe has a two thin strips of metal welded to it which in turn are welded to a bracket that pushes into a rubber mount. The strips of metal eventually snap, usually after major engine work where the engine is moved around(cam belt?). They then make a strange metalic noise during when you put the power on slightly, not usually when cruising. Its movement of the exhaust when the engine twists under load that causes it. I have had it happen twice, fixed once under warranty (after I diagnosed it myself!) with a replacement centre exhaust box, the second time I fixed it myself by removing the centre crossmember (8 bolts) and rmoving the exhaust mounting (4 bolts) and refitting with an additional U clamp. Been OK since.
To test for this climb under the car near the drivers door and push the exhaust around, you should hear the noise.

Had my exhaust checked at ATS and the metal strips in question were stil in tact. It certainly doesn't sound like an exhaust issue.
