got a 98 passat, had new discs and pads last year, changed the pads several weeks ago, copper greased the back etc and i'm still getting a squeal thats quite loud when its nearly come to a stop, any ideas please?

Are you implying you had a squeal before you fitted new pads and did you bust the glaze with a rough piece of carbide cloth or the like. Regards Peter
|
yes and no, anything else besides the pads that could cause it, caliper sliders are ok, car brakes in a straight line.
|
I thought the pads for those came with a 3M rubber backing so didn't need copper grease on. IMO the copper grease needs to go on the pad guide rails, so they slide nicely in the caliper, which probably need a clean because they are corroded.

no rubber backing, got them from VW, put the grease on the rails too

son is a vw mechanic, he says cut a shallow groove across the pads , my old nissan had that
on it's pads. jag.

I've never found copper grease to cure squeaks.
I usually always apply "brake stop squeal", when fitting pads which is more like a bright orange latex coating.

Ashok, where do i get this from? done a google and dont come up with anything.

This is the product, I get it in clear sachets for about £1.50 from a local motorist accessory shop.
Ahh, just like these...

What you do, is put a bead on as shown on the packet, then smooth over the backplate with your finger until bright orange is even, leave them 5 mins or more, and then fit without copperslip on the backplates, but you can copperslip the other parts where the pads 'hook' into the calipers.
I also use Pagid Cera Tec brake grease which is on ebay, it seems to stay greasier for longer than the copper ones.
