I have an 02 Galaxy 1.9TDi with AC problems - my AC man suspects that as he cannot find a significant leak but it keeps losing gas in the space of 4-6 days that the evaporator is leaking. He has given me two options - replace the evaporator which is a big job involving removing the dash board or use a "rad weld" system espaecially for AC units - has anyone any thoughts on teh options, any success with stopping leaks in AC systems, has anyone had an evaporator fail?

A few years back a friend had a Sharan (same A/C system, I believe) and the evap went just out of warranty. It cost a lot to replace. Not long after that the compressor went - another dear job. Not a very reliable A/C system I think.

Whether it's a Galaxy,Sharan or Alhambra,the A/C parts are VW!!

Is it the face lifted one? If so, there are a couple of areas to look at, the evaporator being one of them.

Do not use sealants in the system. Firstly they don't work, secondly they'll screw your system, and thirdly, they'll screw up anyone elses recovery machine. There's only 2 things that should be in an a/c system, gas and oil - no miracle cures.

Funnily enough I had my Astra aircon regassed by an excellent local specialist yesterday, and he had bought a detector which detects what is in the system, especially to do what Dave N mentioned - to see if anyone has used the miracle cure sprays, he said it can damage the compressor as well as his (expensive) aircon machine. It is like putting radweld or an egg in a radiator - a false economy , don't do it...!

Hi guys,
I had very similar problem - my 2002 TDi Galaxy is a single unit and should be filled 750ml, but KwikFit filled it as dual unit - 1050ml. The guy started the car and I felt for few seconds that the temperature started to go down and then started to blow worm air. I said to the guy "Are u sure it has dual A/C? I think is single..." - although as someone mentioned above on the A/C data plate shows the charging quantities for both... So the guy stopped the car straight away and connected the machine again, emptied the A/C system and did the filling procedure again to 750ml of freon.

When done we tested the A/C again and it still was blowing warm air. He said there must be other problem with the A/C and I should check it with specialist (KwikFit only charge and don't repair...)

I have a friend abroad, who is A/C engineer (and a good one...) and I explained to him what happened. He asked me to check few things - whether the pulley of the compressor was engaging when i switch on the A/C - which did, meaning all electrics work and the compressor switches on OK. Then he told me to attach a filling hose with a gauge on it (they come wit the refilling cane of refrigerant - available at Halfords) and the gauge went straight on the last red section at approx 120psi - the red section means "May have mechanical probs".

The pressure and the dial did not change when i turned the engine on and A/C on and off. My mate told me that that means possibly the valves inside the A/C compressor were busted and the compressor does not pump any pressure any more... Bad news, he said. He also said that this could be repaired, but knowing the prices here in the UK it would cost a fortune... May be a new or reconditioned compressor would be wiser.

The problem is that when a compressor (or any other part of the A/C system) is replaced, the system must be purged to clean any particles in the system, than a deep vacuum is applied for 15min or more to clear any air or condensation and then the A/C is re-gassed and re-oiled. Also it is recommended that the Receiver Drier and Expansion Valves are changed when fitting a new A/C Compressor, because contaminated oil trapped in these units will escape the system flush and in time enter the new unit and act as an abrasive.

So, we are stuffed totally from such error of the KwikFit guy.

Anyway, any one knows a reliable auto A/C engineer on London area (London SW, SW)?
My friend is very good A/C engineer, but is based in Bulgaria...

Any advise is welcome. Thanks for you patience to read this!

Roumen

Roumen. I sympathise with your problem, and whilst I personally would not use Kwik Fit for A/C work, I don't entirely think they can be blamed for the problem with your car. It's not that surprising that a 14 year old car needs repairs to the air conditioning system. What would be surprising is if were still on the road with no faults at all.

I have a similar problem with my '04 Galaxy 1.9 Tdi... Except there is no heat coming into the cabin... Would anybody here have any advice to help sort out the problem???? All suggestions greatly received!!! Thanks

No heat in the cabin for me meant that the water pump had failed; the plastic impeller on the metal spindle was no longher gripping the shaft and thus no hot water was circulating plus underload on the motorway it would overheat. All the best.

Sounds like the fans are working just fine. They should both turn on when the AC compressor engages in order to draw cool air across the condensor to cool the freon. Freon leaves the compressor as a high pressure high temperature vapor. It must be cooled and condensed into a high pressure liquid before it will be effective. If you don't run the Air Conditioner, the radiator fans will rarely turn on this time of year. As long as it doesn't overheat when driving in traffic you should be fine.

Interesting that there are two replies to a seven year-old post, I should think the OP has either fixed the problem or got rid of the car by now.
