I have an '03 corsa sxi which is still giving me problems changing gear...its not major and never refuses to change, but it feels notchy and not smooth..had it checked out under warranty to be told its normal.would anyone recommend a synth oil,or should I pursue it further under warranty with vauxhall?

tried another sxi? see if its same?

yes have during a service it was a lot smoother..is was newer but the one I have has only 17k on the clock
|
17k in 3 years isn't a lot of miles, do you do a lot of short trips? my guess is that it feels better when fully warmed up, all my cars certainly have.

Could be the gear linkage. A very very very common Corsa prob, along with dicky steering racks.

Thanks for the replies...so should or would a linkage problem be covered under warranty, last time my dealer mumbled something about "not everything is covered in the 3rd year"

so should or would a linkage problem be covered under warranty,
It depends. If the linkage is worn, then yes, but if it's purely in need of adjustment, then no.

Depends how good your dealer is; some people have got linkages changed under warranty no problem, others have had to really dig their heels in.
But don't be fobbed off with the "we've never heard of that happening before sir" line they may trot out because its utter rubbish- linkages going wrong is a very common thing. I seem to remember being told its something to do with some parts of it being made with metal, some with plastic and so where they meet the plastic bit wears out.

My last couple of Vauxhalls have taken about 20k miles before the gearchanges smoothed out. It's also worth lifting the gear lever gaiter and greasing the nylon gate at the bottom of the lever - this has definitely smoothed the gearchange. They seem to have little grease on them from the factory.

Our 2 corsa SXi's the first Y-reg and the second 05 reg never had any problems, always smooth gearchange although gearchanges aren't traditionally a Vauxhall strong point. As for some things not covered; this refers to trim etc. and should cover faulty mechanicals but as Dynamic Dave says adjustments will not be covered. However, in nearly 3/4 million miles of motoring, mostly in Vauxhalls, I've never needed to adjust a linkage! I guess at least three of my family's current motors (3 x vauxhalls, 1 x Toyota plus 1x VW) will now dismantle their gearchange linkages just to prove me wrong.

Many thanks for the info,I think I'll hit the local v/hall garage, and demand they sort it out.
