A motorist with dementia has been spared jail after being caught driving while banned for the 30th time.
Keith Edwards (57), was given a conditional discharge for a year when magistrates heard he cannot remember he is disqualified.

Edwards was stopped at Conwy, North Wales, driving in the wrong direction while on holiday with his wife. Asked who he was he gave the name Anthony Andrews.

He was remanded in custody for two months until his hearing at Llandudno court.

The prosecution said: 'He has an appalling driving record.' But magistrates said his case was 'highly exceptional'.

Edwards, of Blackley, Manchester, admitted driving while banned, having no insurance and obstructing police.'

How did he remember doing all that?

Like hell he can't. What's wrong with a sticker on his windscreen reminding him? Or his car keys?

How does he remember where he is going to and how to get back on these 30 occasions?

I feel more questions coming on but will resist the temptation.

Will he remember when and where to turn up?

(I am very weak willed when it comes to resisting temptation)

His wife had forgotten too? Lock 'em both up. If he has no respect for the law then he should be put in a place where he cannot disobey it - prison.

If he has dementia then he really cannot remember. Mother out law has alzheimers and will ask same question every 30 seconds.

Dementing men can be aggressive when challenged. Wife may be in fear or just feel it lesser of two evils to accompany him than leave him alone to his fate.

Sounds reasonable. Seen it before.

Frightening - he's the same age as I am.

I think I'm still sane, although going for the B-class instead of hanging on to the Audi is probably the beginning of dementia. Financial sense was the only sense it's made. I went to Bristol today in SWMBO's Civic type S to give it a good rum and realised what a good car it is. It had only been OK compared with the A4.

If he really has dementia, even at 57, I cannot see what justifies his being in custody. No wonder our prisons are overcrowded.

That wouldn't have been the only factor in not giving bail, I can guarantee you of that.

If he cant remember that he is banned how does he got on with the highway code, traffic light sequences, zebra crossings and the other things that contribute to safe driving behaviour. Let alone things like changing gear, which is his car or somebody else's, where he parked it etc. Do I sound sceptical or is this an unacceptable accident risk?

Well he dosn't remember these things, why else has he been pulled 30 times allready?

And why does he still have a car? Surely if the courts can't take it off him a family member would do something?

The man obviously needs a spell in Ford Open Prison. A stretch there is Ernestly dlaimed to be the only known cure for dementia ...

How can he remember how to drive?,or where he lives/going to
"Dementia made me forget ban" - smoke
Depends on cause of dementia. Some inherently "known" things remain while other later things can go. So perfectly feasible to know how to drive where you lived etc but not know that you were banned.

But the point of a ban is not to punish the driver, but to protect all the others who sometimes find him coming towards them head-on. The most obvious solution is to make his car unusable by removing the keys, or worse. It may be harder to prevent him obtaining another, but if his wife won't co-operate in protecting everyone, she is at fault too.
