Short term european breakdown cover - MGspannerman
We are taking our car (1995 W124 Mercedes E class diesel) over to France for a couple of weeks this year on holiday. The car itself is in good condition, well maintained and will be serviced before we go. However it is of course highly advisable to take out breakdown cover and I would welcome any advice on who might provide the cover we need. Incidentally we booked to take the car over with Speed Ferries for the princely sum of £54, travelling on a Monday and returning on a Friday in August.

Thanks in advance, MGs

These people seem reasonable, I've taken out cover with them
but have not had to call them out (yet!)

Certainly seem to be cheap. Undercuts my AA one-off 3 week policy by about £20.

I need annual european cover due to the number of trips I take. RAC was good (£74 last year), but this year they want £96.90 after a 15% discount. I plan to go with Worldwideinsure.com. They are the cheapest at £69 for the year and apparently use Green Flag. I tried but couldn't seem to find Green Flag doing a stand alone european cover.

I guess the short trip cover rate with worldwideinsure.com could be good too - just put your details in.

Quoted me £34 for 17 days in France, 2004 car. Price increases with car age I think. I have not used this company before so I don't know what the service is like.

A few(not many)travel insurance companies will also cover the vehicle.

Many thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I have checked out the various websites and it turns out that travelcover.co.uk and vehicle-rescue.com are one and the same and both came out at £39 for 12 days cover (Bear in mind the car is more than ten years old) So a great result! Cover for much less than the price of a tank of fuel. Thanks to all for their help.

Have you tried your insurance company?
Every time I ring Direct line for a Green Card when we nip over to France they always offer me breakdown cover as well - not sure of the price since I already have cover, but they (your ins co) might do a good deal if you are already insured with them.

Thanks Phil, good suggestion. I am with Norwich Union Direct and providing I dont have to speak to half the population of Bangalore when I call, as I did last time, well worth a try.

Thanks MGs

At least you can probably understand what they are saying unlike the call-centres in some of the more obscure parts of the UK,complete with inpenetrable accents!!

I used to get 12-month cover with Europe Assist for a few pounds more than Brittania Rescue charged me for a fortnight.
