Hi,
My mothers Rover has developed a problem. The gearbox is constantly noisy when in park, and the car has started to stall intermittently when you open the throttle to pull away.
The reason for posting is that we have been advised to scrap the car because it is uneconomical to repair. This goes against the grain because the car has been in the family since new, covering only 32,000 miles and is immaculate.
The concensus from the mechanics I've shown it to is that the "damper plate" is likely causing the noise problem and will cost £500 to fix. The stalling is likely to be something else on top. They advise that the repair will be £1000+ and not to bother.

Is anyone familiar with these symptoms? Does the diagnosis look to be correct? Am I being quoted a fair price? Any advice would be welcome......

Thanks,
Mark
P.S. I've checked the gear oil level and it looks fine....

Yes, looks right to me. Almost any CVT gearbox fault on a '98 one of these means it an economic write-off (unless you can do the work yourself).

You have the same problem as my partner who recently spent almost what her car was worth, to get it back on the road; a £1400 bill for a £2000 car. If the Rover is worth it to your mother and she likes it spend the money. Basically it is immaculate and she likes it but, in its present condition, it is worth the scrap value only.

What about a recon box?

I think a replacement box is around the £800 pound mark ,have a look in Exchange and Mart or Auto trader for suppliers also HJ raves on about a good supplier no doubt he'll pop along and tell us the name again.

If it's only making the noise in Park, then continue using it until the noise can be heard all the time. In the meantime just get the idling problem sorted out.

tell her to put her money into a k11 micra automatic, they are smashing little auto"s
and give the old rover a decent burial.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like it'll have to go to the scrappy.

Out of interest, does anyone know whether changing the box is a possible DIY job? I've done the odd engine change before, so I'm not clueless......

Thx,
Mark

Had a Rover CVT auto about 10 years ago, It had TWO gearbox rebuilds ( Both over £1K ) under warranty in the space of 12K miles that it racked up in under a year.

They aint the best automatic box around, Then no CVT is worth having unless its covered by a bullet proof warranty.

It would be easy enough to swap if you have a few tools handy and know how to use them. The problem will be finding a suitable replacement. A decent (warranted) replacement box would probably cost over £1500 - I doubt you'll find anyone who stocks one, they'll probably want to repair yours.

Thanks....
I'll scrap the car I think. Shame, but doesn't make sense to do anything else....

As has already been mentioned, sort out the idling problem and run it until the gearbox finally gives up. Can't be "that" bad if the noise is only their when in Park.

Failing that, put it on ebay for spares or repair.

Hi,
I was advised that the stalling problem is the gearbox, not an idling problem. Otherwise, I would agree with your suggestion.

The car stalls when you open the throttle to drive off. Feathering the throttle seems to make it stall less.

Anyone else think this isn't the gearbox?
If not, what could it be?

Thanks,
Mark

What is CVT? Is it semi - automatic? Dont scrap the car just yet. Carry on driving it untill it gets loud in all gears. (Could last a year or so) Then you could perhaps find a known good second hand gear box (of a scrap car perhaps accident damaged) if not sell it spares or repairs.

CVT is Constantly Variable Transmission or if you have ever driven one, Rev & go!

CVTs are nice to drive ( when working & that aint for long )

Once a CVT box gets loud it wont last long.

CVT is a total waste of time, Ford have been trying & failing since the late 1980s to get a CTX / CVT box to work for them & still cant get it right.

The only Rover CVT boxes you are likely to find in the scrappy will have the same fault.

Hello everyone ... I just buy Rover 216 cars in year 1996 and my problem is my car was damaged in the gearbox (CVT). When traveling at low speeds the car is stalling, especially when I want to stop. Mechanic Told me my gearbox has been damaged and need repair. Now in Malaysia, no one knows how to fix. If there is anyone there who can help me to learn how to overhaul and the parts that have been damaged.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum MGrover 09.

Its very important to establish that the cause of stalling is the CVT. there are numerous issue's that can cause the engine to stall when slowing down on a 216, especially coked up inlet valves or sticky inlet valves.

I used to decoke many inlet valves on these with a sandblaster filled with walnut husk & olive stone mix to save removing the cylinder head. Just used to make sure the inlet valves were shut & the inlet manifold removed and blast away for about 45 sec. The transformation was remarkable.

However I have sent a PDF file, although not much info to the MODs & hopefully they will forward it to you as this may be of some help.

Hi Injection Doc,
I am pleased that you could help me in this matter. My email is mgrover09@gmail.com. But the car is having problem with the gearbox because I have friends who have changed the gearbox and the problem was solved. My problem now is because in Malaysia it is too difficult to get the gearbox (use parts).

Thanks

Another question...is it imperative it must be automatic? You could problably pick up a badly corroded same model for a few quid and swop over the manual box & linkage. Change the pedal box over and away you go! This work could be done fairly easily if you are handy with spanners.

It's a cheaper alternative if as you say, the car is immaculate.

Just a thought worth considering...

Hi Robin,

Read with interest your post! My wifes 216sli auto gear box is getting very noisey when driving off. Fluid level is ok. Car in pretty good condition. I am handy with my workshop and tools and had been wondering if it is possible to swap the auto box for a manual from a car breaker - plenty of 200 series Rover is the breakers yards.

Have you done this job and is it pretty straight forward? Will the manual box from any 200 series 'bubble back' Rover do? Our 216Sli is a 1997 model. Have to swap the pedal box over and any other details? Need to lift out the engine?

Would be very grateful for your advice.

Sincerely,

Simon - Spokes2.
