Brake Problem - Rover 25 (2001) - dbrowne
Hi,

I have a problem with the brakes on my car. It?s a Rover 25 (2001) {added to subject header in an attempt to catch the eye of any Rover experts out there - DD}. Occasionally, perhaps once every ten times, when I apply pressure to the brake pedal I hear a grinding noise, and the brake pedal vibrates slightly. If I release pressure and apply it again, it is usually fine again. When I am hearing the grinding noise the brakes do seem to be applying, but not with quite their normal force.

I?ve had the car looked at, and apparently the brake pads are nearly new.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Kind regards,

Dylan

Dylan,
I had similar symptoms on a relative's 25. I noticed that the ABS ring on one of the front hubs had a crack in it which had opened up, meaning that the gap between two of the castellations was greater than the rest. Hence I guessed that the ABS (ECU?) would be getting confused and uneven readings from this hub, which was resulting in partial application of the ABS system on occasions. So the car was taken to a local independant and the ABS ring was replaced (from memory this included the whole driveshaft but I could be wrong) and the problem was solved. Maybe this is your problem- I'd start by having a good look at all the ABS rings.

you say the pads are nearly new - were the discs also changed ?
I've had similar problems on a rover when the replacement pads were not identical to the previous pads, using the same discs.
I had to replace both discs (I also put fresh pads in) to resolve it.
What are the emergency stops from 70 MPH like ?

I also had the ABS unit investigated - but ABS specialists are hard to find !

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure if the disks and pads were changed at the same time, I only bought the car a few months ago, but I'll check the history and see.

And from other advice I've received, seems like the ABS could well be worth looking into as a likely culprit.

Being a fairly non-mechanical person, I'll be taking it to a garage to get these things checked out. Could I just ask one further piece of advice... is somewhere like KwikFit an adequate place to go, or should I be looking for somewhere more specialised?

Thanks again for the tips,

Dylan

I don't believe a fast-fit place will be able to advice you on this - they will just want to change bits. You will need a garage that is willing to investigate the problem - perhaps a Rover/MG indie ?

Thanks Steve, I asked a colleague and he said the same.

I also took him out for a quick drive so he could hear/feel the problem, and he suggested it wasn't necessarily a brake problem, but possibly something connected with the tranmission or similar that is just caused by braking. He said the noise didn't sound like a "brake problem" noise.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies. Once it gets sorted I'll post the resolution, in case anyone has similar issue in the future.

Cheers.
