Hi - I have a 98 passat which seems to have developed a problem with water saturating the rear passanger-side footwell when it rains. I have inspected the door seal and there no signs of a leak, the car has never been involved in an accident, and all other areas of the car remain dry.
A friend has suggested it may have something to do with the air-con heater outlet beneath the seat. But if so, why would the problem not occur with other heater outlets?
Any ideas appreciated.

I have read it can be the pollen filter housing drains, how the water gets to the back Ive no idea.
You need to sort it out and put towels down, as it is a very common cause of catastrophic electronic problems, I think it may even be in thecar by car breakdown on this site.

The pollen filter seal is prone to failure on most VW's apparently. I found this out when researching the problem for a neighbour who came back from holiday to find 2 inches of water in the rear footwells. There is a duct from under the bonnet that takes the AC down there and acts like a water shute!

Take a look at www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=40...3
which explains how I solved mine. The main problem was the seal under the pollen filter housing.

is there water anywhere else in boot???if not get someone to hose that side of car whilst your inside you should see water droplets if its coming from door seal/door foil etc good luck..

New pollen filter seal is only around £8 from the VW dealer & an easy diy job to fit.
New cabin ECU that sits under the passenger seat Is around £700 in parts then you pay to have it coded.

My brother had this very problem on his 98 passat estate he took it along to vw dealer and it was the pollen filter seal which is a very simple job i believe but they charged a total of £480.00 they reckoned they took the carpets out and dryed them etc!!!!!

That was around the price VW wanted to charge me.
I got a substantial discount after complaining to VW UK. Car was ony 4 months out of warranty.
Even for a '98 car, if the garage was negligent in its servicing, you may have some justification for a large discount if care was not taken. Or not.
