More for your amusement than anything else: I am driving my jalopy today, a 106. Took it to put some petrol in, started putting diesel in it (normally drive a vRS Fabia). Only 77p, which I've watered down with 37 quid's worth of unleaded.
It seems to be running OK, and the cashier said she's never seen anyone so relaxed about having done it.
Wouldn't have been so relaxed if I'd put petrol in the Fabia...

77/3700 = 0.021, so you've put in 2% diesel to 98% petrol. Engine might be a bit mucky for a tank or two more, but when you look at the amount of oil some cars burn you can't be doing too much harm.
Just for fun take a plug out an look at it! Report back on its colour.

When I put £10 worth of diesel in my Volvo 740's (nearly empty) tank I panicked and drove off the forecourt to a carpark across the road, instead of staying where I was and flling up.
Panic over, I then had to make umpteen trips across the road with one 5l can to top the tank right up.
Car was a bit smokey and gruff for a week or so.

I need to change the plugs, so I'll let you know.....
I like the 740 story. Tough old cars are great aren't they?

Yes the only damage done was to my credibilty with grandaughter who is just old enough to put it down to my age!

I can assure, the Petroleum industry mixes more than that somewhere by accident on a daily basis, but the Petrol or diesel is still sold as it still meets the required standard. Crossovers they call it.

Accidently put 25L of deisel in my 1992 Astra SRi 2L with around 7L of petrol in the tank. I did not turn on the ignition, pushed the car off the petrol court. Then drained the tank by siphoning (2hrs) around 30L out. Put 46L of lead-free correctly and after 16 miles no problems, will check the plug colour. though.
Pleased because the garage would have stuck me with £100 bill!
I think the diesel would not run in a petrol engine and would ruin the catalytic converter.
I can still taste and smell the diesel.
Note you need large fuel containers before you start this, and also small ones to get the tube mouth below the petrol tank height.
Hope this helps

So, could regular 'accidents' like that a contributory factor in the various common rail diesel problems we hear so much about?

I put 6l of UL in the 405 TD. Filled it to the top with Derv, and no issues. Older is better, I think.
