Is it paranoia on my part or do you hear alot of complaints about rattles in Toyotas and Lexusesii.
SWMBOs Corolla has more rattles than my baby daughters toy box (53 plate). HJ reported a perpetual rattle in the long term Avensis and I notice the CBCB for new IS200 has reports of rattles from the front. I was reading an old car mag recently and the RX300 test driver complained of rattles.
Does anyone else hear about this or is it me ?

Certainly, there seem to be glitches in quality control in the latest GS and IS models, leading to rattly dashes. Not present in the LS range. Having owned the original LS, and driving a Mk2 GS right now, I'm pleased to say they are rattle free. As a member of Lexus Owners CLub, most of the people driving older models are also reporting a lack of rattles.

That's good - I was in no way having a go and as I say just asking the question is it me ? - hopefully it is because the Toyota and Lexus Brands are 1st class especially in terms of looking after their customers.

My Corolla , bought new just over a year ago, suffers from serious dashboard rattles particularly over rough roads. The dealer made several attempts to sort the problem but without success. If rattles annoy you; don't buy a Toyota.

Maybe the roads in Japan are better than UK.
However, that would not be too difficult, there's a 'B' road I drive along each day that is like a farm track.

Roads outside the major Japanese cities certainly aren't anything to write home about - which is why Toyota used to test their new cars in the west of Ireland.
Driving an average County Mayo secondary road makes a farm track seem appealing :-)

If i have a rattle on a car i have found from experience that it is best to sort it out yourself, same with a water leak into the car, most workshops do not have the skills/chargeable time to get involved and end up just blowing smoke.

I couldn't agree more. This is both my first and last Toyota and SWMBO will be having a Jazz next.

Better still, don't buy a car that was built on a Friday afternoon ;-)

Our british built Jan 2002 (new shape) first off the line job toyota corrola is a nightmare, squeaks and rattles all round.
The Japanese built Previa however is a completely different story, the quality of the vehicle is solid. Have had 5 1/2 years of faultless service out of it over 75k.

IME with most brands of car it doesn't really matter where they are built (although people like to think so). The assembly operatives have little control over rattles and squeaks - the cars could be built on the moon and still be the same.
Rattles are usually down to the design of the car and depend on the type of clips used and packing materials/sound deadening. Also you will sometimes find a bit of poor design (e.g. folding seat back hinges, parcel shelf etc) that rattles.
Looking at some recent designs I think rattles are often down to the manufacturer skimping on clips and materials - not always to save money, usually its to save on weight.

SWMBO's 99V RAV4 with 74k on it has no rattles. The trim is a bit plasticky and garish but overall it is hard wearing and durable.
Must say I'm impressed with the quality and I've never personally been a fan of Japanese cars

I have to agree-my 2004 Avensis suffers a serious rattle from the boot area-could be something as simple as the tools/jack moving around, but it is taking me ages to identify as I am the only driver and cant drive and it in the back at the same time to identify!
I keep padding bits out-getting better-but could turn out to be the hatch or something...

They're just not as well put together as German cars.
I'll get me coat.........

The roads in the UK are wonderful compared with what you would experience in Bulgaria, for example.

I always bring it up and I am sorry but when I drove that 1994 Lexus GS with over 150k on the clock it was eerily silent.
At very very rapid speeds, it was quieter than my Focus at the motorway speed limit. Not a peep.
I do hope Lexus' quality isn't going down the pan. I'm aspiring to own one someday.
....someday.

Yep, the RAV4 (from 2000 onwards) aka the Rattlers.
dashbaord ticking, rear door rattles, rear removable seats rattles.
