My factory-fitted Rover Blaupunkt CC32 radio cassette player in my 25 IXL has developed "wow and flutter" symptoms on Side A and also emits a tape transport mechanism click. I've tried both wet and dry cleaning tapes to no avail. Side B plays perfectly. Any ideas please?

if cleaning the pinch wheel hasnt stopped the wow factor and the symptoms are same for all tapes then junk the thing.....pronto

Indeed
The whole thing needs to come out, taken apart, and all the transport mechanism (pulleys, belts, gears, pinch rollers,) needs to be cleaned and re lubricated where required.
If you know what you are doing its fairly easy
but
Put it like this, if it was a horse you wouldnt waste the money on vets bills - Soap factory or pedigree chum time.

Agree (mostly) with TVM.
Sounds (excuse the pun) like something inside the unit has mechanically not engaged properly. Could be as simple as dirty or worn linkages. Could, however, also be electronic with one of the variable devices on the way out.
Unless it is a valuable high-end unit, bin it and get a new one.

This is going to be either a broken part or debris caught in the mechanism. It's worth a look at the two steel drive spindles and the pressure rollers for stuck tape debris (from a broken cassette)and tape labels etc. It wouldn't be worth spending too much time on it. Don't "lubricate" the mechanism...it is death to any friction based transport, such as a tape drive. For removing the brown oxides, you can use methylated spirit. (Cleaning tapes are next to useless).

"Don't "lubricate" the mechanism"
I think you will find (in an autoreverse mechanism) that it has gear wheels, cams, detents and levers, all lubricated with lithium grease. The lithium grease collects debris and needs to be cleaned out and renewed.

Isopropyl alcohol is better, meths tends to leave a residue from the dye and additives used to dissuade alkies from drinking it.Apply with cotton buds.

Can you use surgical spirit then??
