Peugeot 206hdi Oil light flashing - Bowlsmad
I have recently had 62,000 service. 1 week later oil light kept flashing and stop sign bleeping. Took car back oil filter changed oil changed again and oil pressure switch renewed. Still flashing. Back to dealer they say no pressure in engine when at idle speed ok when being driven and revs up high. They say havnt had this fault ever before could be oil filter housing or oil pump but not certain. Housing going to cost £200 plus and if that doesnt correct New Oil pump etc cost approx £650 with labour. Anybody experienced this problem and if so how was it fixed please. Worried and poor lady driver.

Likely to be pressure relief valve stuck open-forced further open than normal by the fresh oil-will either free on it's own or need replacing.

Thank you so much for responding. I have passed your comments on to my garage but they say it could be the valve in the housing or the pump so I am still stuck as far as deciding which job I have done. If I choose the cheaper job its a catch 22 the fault will probably be still there and I will have to have the bigger job done. Am I damaging the engine by still running the car?

"forced further open than normal by the fresh oil-will either free on it's own or need replacing."

How does fresh oil do this then?

I've had it happen a couple of times in the past;a combination of a totally clear filter and new oil pushes the pressure relief valve slightly further up it's bore than normal-only a fraction of an inch but due to particles of dirt and lack of wear it sticks allowing oil to flow straight back to the sump;therefore little or no pressure at idle and some pressure showing at max. flow. When it cools it may free. The engines I had it happen were ones where the valve was accessible without dismantling the motor.

I have had oil filter housing renewed as suggested by dealer but this has not rectified the light flashing. I have paid out nearly £400 and still have problem. 4 visits to garage in total. The only thing left is a new Oil pump which is far too expensive. Could it be an electrical fault as the car is running fine expect the engine is running hotter than normal 80 instead of 70., Anymore suggestions please?

Interesting that this problem has only appeared after they changed the oil. What grade and spec of oil did they use? If you suspect that it was too thin, maybe a can of STP additive might be an idea?

Bowlsmad,
have you tried a second opinion? Maybe a local independent could help? Where do you live? Sure someone on here could recommend somewhere to go to.

I would go along with jc2's suggestion that the relief valve may be stuck open. The higher initial oil pressure of fresh (cold) oil in a warm engine, together with the low flow resistance of a new filter make this a distinct possibility.

This is almost certainly yet another casualty of manufacturer's insanely long service intervals; the relief valve bore is likely to be sludged up.

As the sump can be "easily" removed in situ on these models, revealing the pump and relief valve as an assembly, it would be worth a look before any engine damage is caused.

I have just had exactly the same problem immedediately following a 72,000 mile service on a Peugot 206 1.4 HDI engine, i.e. oil light flashing and stop sign bleeping at low revs. When at speed or initially at cold start up the oil pressure warning light does not come on.The oil had been slightly overfilled.

I was wondering whether the cause of this fault has been found yet.

It could be that the electronic gauge has started to become faulty. It does this on my 307 and on a few other fellow Pug owners with cars around the ten year mark.

You could make sure that the electrical connector is clean and not damaged. It's possible that its been disturbed during the service?
