The car is a 2000 Mondeo 1.8 TD (one of the last of the Endura DE engined mk2's)
The problem is an odd low pitched "chattering" noise coming from the cambelt / aux belt(s) area of the engine. It's most noticeable at idle from outside the car, although you can pick it up inside as well. As the revs increase, the pitch increases slightly until about 2,000 RPM when it disappears into the rest of the diesel noise.
The car was supposed to have had a cambelt and tensioner change as part of the deal when we bought it last year, but knowing this dealer, and having found other things that should have been picked up in their supposed 128 point "safety" inspection, I'm now not so sure.
Noise is not affected by switching accessories such as the air-con on or off.
I know it's difficult without hearing it, but any ideas?
Cheers in advance
