Upgrading Radio/Cassette to Radio/CD - Woody
I have a Seat Leon 1.6 which I have decided to keep for another year or two.

It has a factory fit Radio/Cassette but I would like to play CDs. What is the easiest way to achieve this?

Do I need to buy a new unit (perhaps vulnerable to theft) or can I have a CD player put under the seat?

Any help welcome. I live in the Croydon area.

Have you got an iPOD ?

Swap the radio/cassette unit for a slot CD version - when you change cars keep the CD version if you wish and put the original back.

Providing you have the pre 2006 model this may be the one you're looking for.

I know the place quite well,ie Croydon, better off getting a machine that you can hide and still have connected, should not be a problem getting a CD player that fits under seat/or in boot.Does it have ie your installed unit, have external plugs to install new unit?

I sold my mate a Leon and we connected a CD changer into the standard Seat haed unit, the changer hid in the glovebox. It was a Sony one and he was happy with the result as it was much more secure, to all intents and purposes it was a standard looking tape player.

may sound basic but how about a cheap personal cd player and a cassette adapter, sits nicely in glove box and shouldnt cost more than bout 20 quid

I use this option at present - CD player is velcroed to the dash.
Pros: You can hide the CD when not in use
Cons: CD tends to jump, even using the players jog protection
No control of CD via stereo controls.

I intend at some point to add a 'proper' cd changer, so that I will be able to control tracks etc through the stereo controls.

Well worth it - and on ours, a doddle to fit.

Let me know if you need any advice - I spent hours researching before I eventually did it.

I have a VW Bora, which is the equivalent of the Toledo. The CD player (six disks) is in the boot hidden out of sight in the First Aid section.

The head unit controls the CD player plus the Blaukpunct RDS radio and cassette player.

I would assume, though I might be wrong, that the original Leon unit would also control a boot mounted CD player; if not, then replacing it with a slot CD unit would be the most simple way if the wiring isn't available for a boot mounted player.

Many thanks for the help.

Ebay purchase of radio/CD looks the best option, although the seller has a few negative comments against his name.

Given that it is security coded, as per the current unit, it seems no greater a security risk.

>>Given that it is security coded>>

Just one other point about my Bora's ICE system is that it is "keyed" to the vehicle itself.

That means if I have to disconnect the battery for any reason, when it is reconnected I don't have to enter the security code as it has been memorised. It takes about a minute or so for the unit to become operative again.

Just fitted a H & B CA5555 to the Porsche, AM/FM + CD MP3 player plus plays USB & MMC/SD cards & has the ability to manage a remote CD changer. All for £ 106 from Dabs, brilliant audio, vastly exceeds the speaker capability!
