Stiff tiptronic box on Passat - blueowl
I have my first automatic car: Passat PD130 Highline tiptronic 2004.

The box works ok whilst the car is moving. The problem comes when I start it in the morning when it has been parked overnight, handbrake on and the lever in "Park." It then needs brute force to pull the lever out of "Park", even though I have my foot on the brake pedal.

Any thoughts please?

Is it on a slope?

I assume Park locks the gear box. When you park put the handbrake on release the foot brake then engage Park and try that. Regards Peter

No and I get the problem whatever the gradient.

What if you stop and keep your foot on the brake while moving in and out of Park? What people are thinking is that the Park dogs are getting nipped by the car wanting to move while in P due to being on a gradient or due to reales of transmission wind-up.

If the VW is the same as the Audi the footbrake has to be applied to set and unset from to 'P' anyway. You don't mention mileage, but at 40,000 miles the transmission fluid should be changed.

Far from it - if fluid isn't changed at 40,000 miles and a failure is suffered VAG may not honour the warranty. Details of mileages for changes are in the service book.

The car has done 36,000. I have had it for about 2500. It has a full main dealer history and I am taking it back to the dealer's in the next few days for them to have a look. I know it has been used for towing by its previous owner and I wonder if this has caused premature gearbox wear.
