Poor Kinnochio. He was practically mimsing just for a start. And then, being a politician, he is more or less obliged to pretend he thinks it's a good thing he's been busted: 'speed is a killer' etc etc, load of tosh which he knows is tosh but has to say.

Poor Kinnochio. Obviously a nice man (for one of his profession I mean) whose main fault was logorrhoea.

"Just shows some politicians are not beyond the law."

No politician is beyond the law but loads of them act as though they are or are treated as though they are! Remember a certain 'strange' politician and a fudged up mortgage application? If any of us had done that we would have been dragged thru the courts and quite rightly too!

I did say 'by political standards'. Politics is a strange profession largely incomprehensible to ordinary human beings although we can't help rabbiting on about politics with a laughable assumption that we know what we're talking about.

And politicians impinge on our freedoms, motoring included, which can make us resent them a bit.

Nothing wrong with Kinnochio though, apart from talking too much. His wife's all right too, and good looking.

You beat me to it care of Deal or No Deal...:-)

...but in fact for not eradicating or seemingly having any impact on it according to media reporting claims.

I wonder how many backroomers haven't broken temporary speed limits on motorways, which are usually imposed where there are roadworks? These limits apply even during periods when there is no work being carried out and many people ignore the speed limits during such periods.
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - mark
Surely some New Labour spin here

He has "campaigned against speeding all his life" but got 15 points in 3 years.

Doesnt look like he practised what he preached then.

As always

Mark

Being Labour he will probably "Put measures in place to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again". Until the next time!
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Lud
Yes, get one of the cars mentioned in another thread which can be programmed to mutter curses at you when you exceed a predetermined velocity... Why do people think only Labour politicians behave like politicians? Are so many backroomers young enough to remember nothing but New Labour (after Kinnochio's time by the way, he was painfully street-cred old labour actually...)
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - madf
he's a typical politician. tells us what to do. Does something entirely different.

So true to stereotype, it would be funny if it was not so sad.

Next he'll be telling us he believes in green issues, recycling, low carbon emission cars , etc.. but will of course not drive one:-(

I wonder what will happen when he applies for his licence back -will someone at the DVLA (in Swansea) say no. That would be true justice for a former European Transport Commisioner.

If he does get it back, I doubt if the large increase in insurance will make much of a dent on his Euro salary. How would be for you or I?

I'm not vindictive (well not normally) But"He was warned not to drive during his ban and told he would have to reapply for his licence at the end of it. "

I wonder if they will not give him his licence back on the grounds he was a persistent offender...?

There has been much talk of in this thread about the whys and wherefores of politicians speeding. I havew jsu been reading the late Alan Clarks diaries, and he regularly sped (140+ regularly), but only got prosecuted once. This was of course 15 or 20 years ago, so no cameras. We live in a different world.
Diverging slightly, on many occasions he got so fed up with the pace used by his official driver he ended up driving himself home in the official car!
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Lud
I must say that the amusing and rather nasty (but with very good taste in cars) Alan Clark has crossed my mind several times looking at this thread. He got a Bentley R Type Continental he was thinking of buying up to over 100 in Hyde Park once.

Come to think of in in the early sixties I knew, slightly, another nasty man who had a tuned XK140 drophead (not roadster I seem to remember) with a very loud straight-through exhaust, in which he regularly hit 100 in The Mall. As a racing mechanic who lived round here in the 60s used to get E Types, Aston Martins and so on up to over 90 in a place now covered with speed bumps and similar ghastly rubbish, not a mile from where I live.

Wow, 63mph on a regular non-roadworks section of the M4 in Wales.

Thats crime of the century really, isn't it?

Good job he's off the road in his properly maintained, safe Audi, eh. He's a menace to us all.
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - JH
Really! Stop it, you'll make me sorry for a politician.
JH
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - AlastairW
Actually now I think about this how is the ban going to inconvenience him?
Firstly, Glenys has a licence, does she not?
Secondly, when on official EU business won't he be entitled to the use of an official car and driver (at our expense)!

No road works? So why a 50 mph limit?
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - audiaudi
QUOTE: """Speeding is a killer and I have campaigned all my life against speeding,"

He has campaigned against speeding all his life, and know it contributes to deaths on the roads. However, he has the gall to to try and look good by not pleading 'hardship' as he covers 18k mls a year mainly for charity work.

IMO, a man of his age and preachability and public standing must BAN himself for life if he was half decent!

'preachability'?

IMO you're being a bit strict here audiaudi.

Perhaps if Ms Kinnock had had another make of car you wouldn't have got so wound up.

Neil Kinnock banned from driving - MichaelR

I have NO idea.

But it's true. Seriously - drive along the M4 towards Swansea. There is at least 5-6 miles of it which is a 50mph speed limit - a permanent one.

Drove me insane last time I went along there, felt so slow and ridiculous crawling along at 50mph.

"in his wife's audi"

I thought he would have preferred a Honda Civic or Alfa Brera.

At least they have a big red button on them, I thought his lifetime ambition was getting a chance to press one of those!

Remember him droning on in the 1980's about the UK's industrial decline?

Nice to see him driving an Audi.

Calm down guys, it's an Audi A4, hardly lavish exotica is it?
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Nsar
I seem to recall him going over on his roof on a motorway about 15 years ago.
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Lud
Really? So he's one of us then.

Stop slagging the poor guy off.
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Nsar
You're right, after all, he's done no harm.
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Avant
Obviously the law has to take its course, and Neil Kinnock is right not to complain, publicly at any rate. But there are many worse drivers around, so I think we should spare the schadenfreude (since he was in an Audi).

I would much rather reserve vitriol for the petty little tyrants who impose a 40 mph limit on a stretch of motorway. 50 mph is slow enough to protect any workforce, and as Machika says above some of these sites have no work being done at all.

Some of the contractors are a complete law unto themselves, and what they do (or don't do) is I'm sure often unknown to the Highways Agency or whoever authorises the roadworks. Other people have jobs to do which are just as important, or more so, than theirs, and they should make far more effort to minimise the inconvenience they cause.

So just a tinge of sympathy for Neil Kinnock may be in order - it could happen to many of us.
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Lud
Well done chaps.
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - BobbyG
First one was on 26 June, second on 29 Sept. If I am reading correctly, the first one would have taken him to 12 points and he would have been banned.

So why didn't it? He must have had his NIP within 2 weeks so did he try delaying tactics to put it off? And then silly enough to get done again for speeding whilst that was happening? Or maybe he was hoping that by delaying it some of his existing points might have dropped off?
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Baskerville
No stupid health and safety limits to protect non existant workers, of
course ... so we had the occasional oncoming truck on our side from time to time.

Having health and safety regs is so very stupid, isn't it? /sarcasm
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - L'escargot
Neil Kinnock was unfortunate in two respects. Firstly he got caught, and secondly (being a public figure) the case got more than average publicity. How many Backroomers can, with honesty, claim that they have never exceeded a speed limit? Own up, guys and gals!

L\'escargot.
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - duncansand
Unfortunate and Stupid if you ask me.

He's a national politician, nearing the maximum number of points, and got done on the M4 where he, presumably, regularly drives and so knows of the restrictions. Duh !

If I had been him, I think I might have been ultra-cautious, knowing that another camera snap and I'd loose my license. As for all this "I've campaigned all my life" nonsence, why on earth did he not take some of his own medicine? I think Neil generally gets a bad press, but this whole story just makes me wonder about his sanity. What on earth was he thinking of? And having got caught, he should have just kept his mouth shut - going on about the campaigning nonsence just makes him look stupid.
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Stuartli
According to today's Daily Mail: "Lord Kinnock, who lives in West London, was driving two Audi A4s registered to his wife, Glenys."

Impressive...:-)

I was driving back from Chiang Mai to Bangkok after a holiday weekend a few years ago. The dual carriageway was solid. At first the dirt track on the side became an unofficial third lane. Then people started using the fast lane on the other side. I've never seen anything so crazy. Oncoming traffic was swerving to avoid the traffic on the wrong side. My Thai wife didn't seem too concerned though...
Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Roly93
Its refreshing to see that even the old-boy network couldn't innoculate him from being done ! I have nothing against Kinnock (at least less than most politicians), and I salute him for taking it on the chin.
I have to say though, he must be very un-observant to have been done so many times in 3 years. We have drivers who presumeably do much more mileage than he would on the Western M4, and they seem to manage okay.

I feel slighty sorry for him, minor misdemenours after all.

They were jovially speculating on 5Live the other day as to whether he "took the points" for Glenys, it was her car after all, if so he would be in real trouble.

Reckon he should have been banned 20 years ago, banned from talking that is.

Neil Kinnock banned from driving - Snakey
I wonder if he would still have banned if he had been a premiership footballer with the 'right' lawyer?

I cannot believe this thread is still getting answers after 2 days.

When I posted it I thought it might get 20 posts, but its now hit 50 posts.

Must be because we hold politicians in such high regard (TIC), or is it what they do, rather than what they say!

I still think that someone who has been caught speeding 5 times in three years should have some retraining. His last 2 times he was caught when he was returning from Westminster to home, so he cannot use pressure of work and deadlines - just a heavy right foot and a lack of attention to posted speed limits. Serves him right he lost his licence. I hope the difficulty he faces with reapplying for his licence teaches him a stiff lesson.
