Is it me or does anyone else notice the ammount of drivers who slam there brakes on to look at an overhead warning signs on the M25 that helpfully say things like "Dont Drink & Drive"
At peak times I have seen lots of rear end shunts around these signs especially if they are displaying a long message regarding future congestion problems. Whilst the message is helpfull I think that some drivers with slower reactions or poor eyesight are becomming dangerously distracted!

Seems to me this is symptomatic of "Nanny" Blair's attempts to impose rules, regulations, instructions, advice, etc. on all aspects of our lives. What happened to personal responsibility.

They're just another bit of information to absorb and relate to the other stuff going on around you. Never seen any evidence of rear ends concentrated around them, but a bit like not being able to tell a highway patrol from a cop car, it's worrying people so unobservant get licences.
I really appreciate the long range information showing trouble on the A43 west of Northampton on signs near Leicester; plenty of time to sort out a divert.
And nanny messages are not limited to the UK. Several signs on the Autoroute near Annecy a couple of years ago were showing pare brise nettoye = securite which we translated, hopefully correctly, as safety is a clean windscreen

Or: 'Remember, your nipper may need a slash and you may not be able to hear his (or her) screams over the clamour from the back axle and the stereo cd do with a head clean...'

'the stereo cd do with a head clean...'
Sounds like it's not the only thing! ;o)
