Hi
A friend has a Vectra with a cold starting problem. It will start fine when the glowplugs are initiated (below 4°C), however it takes a lot of cranking before spluttering into life at anything above this, when the glowplugs aren't activated by the ECU. Is there any way to increase the temperature at which the glowplugs don't turn on?
Thanks in advance.

bump!
I guess the eerie silence means that it's a 'feature' rather than a bug?

Sorry you haven't had any replies! Most unusual! My partner has SAAB 202 Tid which is a GM engine, broadly speaking. In temps above about 5C the glow plugs don't even come on and the car starts OK; on a cold frosty morning the plugs do their stuff and it starts when you try, after the warning light has gone out. I know this doesn't exactly answer your query but I am making the point that some engines will start without the need for glow plugs.

Is it high on miles? Could the compression be a bit low?

56k, doesn't smoke at all and has been a good runner, apart from a faulty MAF sensor replaced under warranty.
Do you think it's worth getting a compression test done?

The most common problem for poor cold starting on these GM diesel engines is porous spill off pipes to the injectors .(allows air into fuel line).Get down to your local Vauxhall dealer & buy a length of pipe & cut to size (about £10)

The failure to start over 4 degrees is probably a red-herring'.
These engines do not switch on glow-plugs if the coolant temp sensor reads above +4 C.
However veach injector has a small rubber overspill pipe which tends to perish and leak air into the fuel system. This is a very well known fault and can be fixed by just replacing these little rubber pipes, (preferably with silicone rubber ones if you can find it).
This would account for the extreme churning when starting ther car after it has been standing, although the weather may not be very cold.

Hi Mate,
My Vectra 98 2.0 DTI with 180 k on the clock starts with or without glow plugs at any temp no problems at all, turns over 3 times at the most.
I keep telling the wife to wait for the yellow light to go out, she forgets and starts it straight away.
I would do as the others say and fit the new spill pipes, i have even read on other posts of owners fitting a non return valve in the fuel line.
