Take a look at a Saab: either 9.3 or 9.5

Could hold a party in the boot. Nippy turbo engines too

I have read good reports on the 1998-2003 Honda Accord. This comes in both saloon and hatchback so should accomodate your space needs. The engines range from 1.8 to 2.3 and include the storming 2.2 Type R.
This is what whatcar had to say about the ride and handling: (I hope I have not infringed any copyright doing this - it is direct from Whatcar web site):

"Along with the high-revving engines, the Accord feels more of a driver?s car than many humdrum saloons. That means sharp steering, strong grip, powerful brakes and good body control with little price to pay in the way of an unsettling ride. The Type-R, on its firmer suspension settings and bigger wheels, is too stiff for some tastes".

Apparently refinement is not up there with the best and it may not have the 'presecence' of your beemer but it must be worth s test drive.
If you buy from a Honda dealer their used car scheme is very good and I have seen them advertised on the web from £4K plus - although you do not mention how much you want to pay.

If you try one let us know how you get in.

Any beemer/Merc will be a problem, as the RWD configuration eats boot space.
Tourings offer a bit more, but check the security issue - easier for scrotes to break some glass and reach into the load area.

How about a post-03 Legacy? it's different, fun to drive, quick, spacious and handsome
