Hi Guys,
Got some conflicting information regarding changing the rear discs and pads on my 2002 Peugeot 406 estate lx HDi. My colleague (who is a technician like me) says that the caliper will need to be wound back in prior to fitting the pads, using a special tool (although he says it can be done with a pair of grips). But Haynes manual says all thats needed is to push it back using a screwdriver Against the old pad or using a G-clamp. I've just had it Mot'd and its reported that the o/s/r disc was corroded so as I've got front judder I thought I'd change the discs and pads all round in one go. Anyone out there tell me which it is??
Thanks

If you can hang on until Wednesday morning I can check for you with the information I have at work.

Thanks!!
I'm certainly in no hurry to do the job. I'm a typical Technician over the age of 50......If it starts and runs, then leave it alone. I can wait.

If it uses the citroen system then the handbrake is on the front wheels,if its on the rear wheels then you will indeed need to screw it back, its not hard I bought the kit sometime back for a tenner at the local spares shop.

Citroen seem to prefer handbrakes where the pads are shared with the main pads - back or front (our ZX has discs on the back with h/brake using main pads). These use wind in pistons. However, I saw someone overhauling the rear brakes on a 406 when I was getting some bearings pressed in - and that had a separate drum for the handbrake. You will just have to take as you find! If the piston has grooves in it, then it will need screwing in. You can usually do it with a big screwdriver, but it's a PITA!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

When I did the rear discs on my 406, I seem to recall that I just pushed the pistons in. It is a 1998 saloon though.

Hi Robin
Should be an ATE caliper on sliders so the piston should push back normally.

Thanks for the info. I may get the tools out and give it a service and do the brakes as well. I can the parts for next to didly squat as I work for Unipart - which owns Partco!!!
Again thanks

I also have a 2003 406 estate (110HDi). I just changed my rear discs and pads last week as the discs were rusty and badly scored. Mine had ATE calipers and you can just push back the piston quite easily.
