What is the hardest wearing on paint on modern cars metallic or pearlesant?I'm fed up with all the stone chips on my bonnet!

Andy,
You need one of those USA style bonnet gloves.

Andy,
Also popular in Australia, but called a car bra there. Try:
www.carbra.com.au
Many UK cars are sold in Oz so you may get a match.
As an alternative, almost every car sold in Oz has a polycarbonate plastic bonnet protector available as an accessory. I have never seen them here but while they only appear to protect the front edge of the bonnet they do seem to work. I used them on a Holden Barina (aka Vauxhall Corsa) and a Subaru Outback. Perhaps worth looking to see if any UK parts dealers list them?

The problem with car bras is that they rub the paint and cause as much damage as they save.Better to fit a perspex bonnet shield or cover the leading edge with clear film .
|
UNfortunately the perspex shield and Headlamp covers (neccesary if you do a lot of long-distance driving across the arid regions!) have become another toy for the Kevins and Craigs to put on their pocket-rockets, and as such have got very expensive here.
My biggest problem with paintwork is the bugs and moths - the little bleeders make a hell of a mess, and their 'juice' is often highly-corrosive.

The Renault Laguna has a plastic leading edge. Mind you, so did our old Citroen Visa!

pearlesant on my present car seems better than the metallic on the old

They are exactly the same! With modern car paints the metallic/pearlescent basecoat is applied first then both are covered over with the same kind of clear laquer, and it is the laquer that chips first.

Amazing, isnt it ,how many good ideas get forgotten
Like fly off handbrakes, for instance, total perfection in every way and not available!
