I'm about to sell my Peugeot 306 privately. It's got 6 weeks MOT left to run and I was thinking about putting it through for a new MOT before I sell it as I'm sure this will add to the value.
How much is is likely to add?
The car is a 1994 M plate 1.4xl with 132k on the clock.

It might not add value but will increase interest. If you had a choice of one car with six week MOT and another with 12 months, which would you opt for?
When selling a car a new MOT always make sense. Of course a car could pass today and still fail tomorrow so no guarantees on road-worthiness.

I wouldn't buy a car of that age with less than 10 months MoT, and I suspect very few people would buy with less than 6 months. Given that it may not sell at all, the answer could be a lot. In good order I'm guessing it might fetch £450 (ask £495) with 12 months? With 6 weeks, you'd be lucky to get £225, IMHO.

Didn't bangernomics reckon an MOT is worth a pound a day.
|
A 12 year old base spec 1.4 306 is worth scrap weight with only 6 weeks MOT so it's more a case of if it's got 12 months MOT it's saleable and if it hasn't its not.
|
I agree with other comments: If it won't take much to pass then get it an MOT. I doubt there would be many takers without one.
|
Trouble is....if it fails a new MOT and needs anything significant doing then that would leave the OP in an awkward position.
I assume that it would not be legal to sell the car as roadworthy, with 6 weeks remaining on the old MOT, given that it would've failed a recent MOT?
|
I actually think that even if it fails the MOT it will be easier to sell as the prospective purchaser knows what will be required for the test.

with this mileage and on this year i would seriously consider cutting my losses and scrapping it as it will be a real sticker with that mileage and a full mot unless you sell it for £295/395 and hope and cope with the idiots you will meet at this end of the market(make sure all legal paperwork is sorted before car goes)

Your further problem is the re-test issue. If you have to wait for parts to arrive/be fitted then you'll pay a full re-test, so that's £42.00 x 2.
On your side is the fact that it's sub 1500cc, so cheaper tax, and presumably a fairly low ins grp, so it may appeal to a younger driver, unless it's sludge coloured.

I'd say best bet is whack it on ebay with lots of photo's and a good description. Then let market forces do they're stuff.
