Hi- I've just been told that my Yaris's front discs need replacing, having dropped below the 16mm minimum. As I was only planning on getting the pads changed, it's going to be more expensive than I was hoping for - £175 (inc. pads) instead of £70 approx.
The car is a 1.0, 02 reg, and has done about 22k miles. Is this typical?
Cheers
John

Search for this thread as it came up about 4 weeks ago. 2 year old corroded discs. Regards Peter

Sorry Peter- I've searched this forum <3 months but the closest I could see was one on bubbling alloys.

FWIW My yaris is 2001, done 59K miles and still on the original pads and disks.
To my untrained eye the pads look like they've got quite a lot of wear left, and the disks look pretty much like new (no major scoring or obvious corrosion). Though it never occurred to me to measure the thickness of the disks. Will have to do that.

Thanks dylan- I don't think I have a choice. Bloke at garage showed me the discs and measurement on his digital ruler thingy, Toyota have confirmed the minimum is 16mm, so I'm just off now to get them done.
I blame my wife's 'enthusiastic' driving :-)

This happened to me as well at 26000 miles so I don?t think your wife?s driving is at fault. I would also add that we were still on the original brake pads, which had not worn out.
In some ways I was a bit surprised, but as this has been all that has gone wrong we must not complain, when you hear the bad news that some people have had with other makes of cars.

P.S Our Yaris 1300 was built in Japan, not France.

I have an 03 Yaris: little wear on discs. BUT I brake ghard down a steep hill 1 mile long evry week and this cleans off rust etc.
Lack of use is major cause of problems or washing wheels and leaving wet discs to rust...

Good grief what do you use to brake?
At 59k i would have expected that is at least your second set of pads?

Well I'm on 75k now and still original disks and pads. Pads still look like they've got a while to go. I'm a pretty relaxed driver, and a lot of the miles are on the motorway, so I guess that has helped with the longevity.

I understand all that has been said about driving style etc. This still does not explain why in my case, the discs needed changing when the original set of pads still had friction material on them. I live up in the hills, so I can understand acelerated wear rates, but not a set of discs for every set of pads fitted.

Does your car have alloy wheels?
Do you wash them regularly?
Do you hose under the vehicle?
Is it driven wet into a garage and left unsued for days?
Yes to any of the above means disk corrosion.

but not a set of discs for every set of pads fitted.
When pads were made of asbestos, they were softer and lasted a lot longer than the discs. The material they're made of nowadays is as hard as the discs themselves. Couple that with the corrosion mentioned that can form on the discs, that's why more often than not you have to fit new discs when you fit new pads.

The answers are Yes,No,No,No
I take the point on the composition of the pads.
We intend to keep the car as its no trouble and I rather like driving it localy, also it does not stand us in much cash. It will be going in for a yearly service & MOT at the begining of April. So I will report back.
Incidentaly, my Wife had a Cleo at the same time that was still on the same dics at 37000.
As a matter of interest, how much wear (in mm) does Toyota permit on a disc ?

Depends if abs fitted or not.
non abs. new disc 18mm min thickness 16mm
abs new disc 20mm min thickness 18mm
assuming front of course.

isnit about 1 mm ? fords usually are? anything above that is severe isnt it?

If its only 1 or 2 mm that explains it. Not much wear realy. In the old days I would have put them up in the lathe and cleaned the wear ridge off.
