This is actually a massive overall hike in VED revenue masked by a supposed environmental strategy, yet this revenue will not be plowed back into roads and transport, the motorist simply has to bear an ever greater tax burden.

Good old Chancellor Brown! He will surely get a positive response to this from most quarters though the fact is that he is ripping us motorists off with one hand while he panders to the green lobby with the other.

An average medium to large petrol car can now cost over £200 to tax however the less efficient cars already make a much larger contribution to the Chancellors coffers via fuel duty. And there is a reasonable hike for Pre March 2001 vehicles as well.

The truly daft thing though is that, for instance, a a 1999 reg 1.6 Clio now costs £50 a year more in VED than a 2000 reg model though a 1999 S500 costs £30 less than a 2000 reg model and £50 less than a 2006 reg model.

How is that an environmentally friendly policy.

Being very slow on the uptake and dimwitted to boot, I've been scratching my head about this for a while. I've only just, by looking at the webiste the HJ links to, realised that these rvariable ates only apply to private cars registered post 2001. So that

a) explains why I always just pay the 170 quidish and always have done. Didn't know what you were all talking about.

b) negates Cheddars' point about the Clios, surely?

That's true. Fortunately mine and Dad's cars are pre 2001 and Mum's (the smallest!) just on 2001.

I think I'll always buy old.

Why on earth should he be expected to have a license? It is actually quite posible to do without a car, particularly if you live/work in London. But then again maybe his wife drives.

Brown is also blind in one eye and IIRC has less than perfect vision in the other, so may not be able to get a license.

It's especially easy to do without a car if you have a chauffeur driver Jag at your beck and call.

It might be possible to commute using public transport or even a bicycle, however unless you are living an atypical lifestyle getting around without a car is quite impractical.

The genie is out of the bottle, jobs aren't for life and most folk now don't move to where the job is, they commute.
I've known people who commuted for 2 hours or more each way because they got the lifestyle they wanted out in the shires, local jobs that could support that lifestyle didn't exist and they made their choice and were happy with it.

I worked in the City for 20 years and public transport is geared up to get people into the centre and that's it, cross london travel outside the City/West end corridor is abysmal.

Large numbers of supermarkets, white goods retailers, etc exist on retail parks which pay lip service to public transport.
A 8-10 minute drive to my local Supermarket taked 30-40 minutes by public transport with a change of bus required.

I work in London and would find it difficult without my car, my wife works in London and whilst only needing her car to commute could not do her job without a car - are we in the minority - I don't think so.

Why? My point is that the VED policy means you pay LESS driving an old big thirsty car than a new big thirsty car though pay MORE driving an old economical car than a new economical car.

Perhaps both of Prescott's Jags are pre 2001!

Mine is a 1999 model so this year I'll have to pay £175 tax for a 2171cc diesel. This is fine for people who dont know what the CO2 output of their pre 2001 car is. But my handbook states that my car produces 164g/km CO2.
I emailed DVLA and asked if there was a form I could fill in to have my car re-classified as a Band D car under the new system, because I had documentary evidence of the CO2 figure. The inevitable response came back that, "no there would be too much paperwork if everyone applied to get their cars reclassified for VED".
Well 50% of motorists wouldnt realise they could change, and 25% couldnt be bothered, so I dont think they'd be snowed under with applications?

Okay so I'm not really bothered about having to pay £40 more over the course of a year, I was just trying it on, but it makes you think doesnt it? If your VED has gone up significantly with this budget, think of the poor devils with pre-2001 1600cc diesel cars paying £175 VED!..

Sorry Cheddar, I thought you meant the 99 clio and the 00 Clio were affected by variable VED, when they are not. Wasn't a wilful misunderstanding, just muzzy headedness on my part. Point taken.

Has any one noticed that the intended victims of this tax are not just SUVs, 4x4s, etc. but virtually every petrol/diesel vehicle over 2.5 li including the likes of the Mondeo and Honda estates. Nothing to do with being environmentally friendly it's about raising more cash for Brown to squander on public sector jobs that do nothing for wealth creation in this country.

I've read the Telegraph's analysis of the Budget tonight whilst enjoying a pint of Guinness in the club and was quite surprised (but pleased) just how damning it was on every aspect of Brown's offerings.

Alright I lied.

It was three or four pints of Guinnesss.
