Vehicle:
Golf Mk4 1400 S, 60k miles.
Symptoms:
Engine is chucking up oil into the air filter as well as leaving deposits of oil on the ground. Oil deposits are blackened despite a recent engine oil & filter replacement.
Engine starts OK and drives seemingly normal. No unusual noises either.
Anyone have a similar problem or input?

Was it doing this before the oil was changed? It's not overfull is it?

It was leaking before the oil change. Been checking the oil level regularly since the leak started. I think it is unlikely to be due to overfilling.
Thanks

Block emmissions control pipework due to mayo type muck inthem after a damp winter is you best hope. Busted or worn rings is your worst possibilty. open the filler when running and loosely place a piece of clean rag over the whole sealing doen firmly. This cloth should be deflected equally in and out, if there is a lot of air pushing out then you have a problem. This could be worn rings or a head gasket blowing into a oil return ( zero pressure ) gallery thus pressurizing the system. A comprssion test and a Fumes HC sniff will help to identify which. Upon inspection of the engine air filter unit I found in contained a fragment (1/3) of a rubber gasket. It appears cracked. It has a radius of about 4cm. I can't tell where it originally came from though.

Sounds like a blocked oil breather. Had exactly the same issue on a Polo.

Did the oil breather need to be replaced, or can it be repaired?
