MB E320 CDI Power Loss - taffyrts
Car: Mercedes Benz "E" Class Estate 320 CDI May 01 Reg: 37,000 miles

Problem: I cannot get the engine revs above 2000 rpm when trying to accelerate in top gear. Engine will rev beyond 2000 rpm in neutral and in the lower gears as the car accelerates, but once in top there is no response once 2000 rpm is reached. Dropping the auto box down a gear does not help and there is no response to "kick down"

My MB garage diagnosed a failure in the Air Mass Sensor and this was replaced.

The car was fine for a day, but the the problem reappeared.

I am concerned at the cost of getting the garage to search for clues to the problem, so if anyone here has any suggestions, I should be most grateful

Really it has to be back to the dealer, doesn't it? The fact that replacing the air mass sensor corrected the fault means that they are probably looking in the right area - it could be a wiring failure for example. These are very complex fuelling systems and without the right equipment and knowledge it is pretty futile to speculate - 'poke and hope' just doesn't work with CR diesels. And yes, they are generally expensive to diagnose and fix.
If you are in the Midlands area I can give you the name and number of a guy who have the equipment and knowledge (and enthusiasm!) to tackle these problems.

Thanks for the offer Aprilia - infortunately I am in South Wales, so will have to subsidise my local MB franchise until they come up with a solution!!

Ah, well, that three-pointed-star doesn't come cheap when there's a faulty diesel unit under the bonnet!

You may like to look at:

www.stuttgartgarage.co.uk/

which is in the MB Club Good Garage Guide only as a result of member recommendation(s).

There's also an independent diesel specialist in Shrewsbury, but that's probably too far:

There is a dump vavle situated I think at the rear and below the exhaust manifold mounted in a pipe a swine to get at.It is purly mechanical with no wiring ,it gets clogged up and normally puts the engine management light on if it is left to long it effects the ecu and puts it into safe mode. The problem is that these warnings are not self resetting and you have to reset the ecu to clear the display. The electrics on the E class can be a nightmare if you do not have the correct software I think the most annoying is the clock segmant failure you have to purchase a whole new binnacle at some very expensive price and then have it programmed into the car.

It isn't academic interest totally, I run the same model.
