What's the oldest car you've bought for regular transport? My first two cars (Wolseley New 14 and Citroen 12) were both 20 years old when I bought them in 1956.

L\'escargot.

Had a old 60's viva in the 80's & Opel Rekord that was 25 Y/O
Have found that 80's VW's seem to be my banger material now, 1 86 polo for Daughter had a 87 polo for mrsmm & have just replaced it with a superb 88 Scirocco. VW's of this era seem to keep on going. Will add all had good service history & lowish mileage, But are of a age where nobody will take a risk

I bought a '68 Beetle in '78, my first car, it felt ancient compared with the Austin 1300 and Cortina that my parents drove at the time, to think they still made them 20 years later.

Sorry, no it would have been '79, and my dad probably had a Chrysler Alpine by then.

I bought a 1947 Triumph Roadster in 1968, and ran it for 10 years.
A 1961 LandRover in 1980.
A 1964 Triumph 2000 in 1998, still in daily use.
A 1949 Ferguson tractor in 1985, still in regular use.

Very dull. A 1985 Nissan Sunny Coupe in 1996. Nice car actually. Bought for £700, sold for £600 a year later after "earning" me £1000+ in expenses. Suffered HGF, so got it fixed and PXed it.
Oldest car you've bought - Wee Willie Winkie
I bought a 1970 VW Beetle and a 1975 Beetle in 2005, a 1974 Beetle in 2004, a 1973 MG MIdget and a 1963 Morris Minor in 2003.

Do I win?

Even duller. Never bought 2nd hand.

However, the Mark III Fiesta we bought in 1997 (I kid you not) will have come off the production line in 1995.
Oldest car you've bought - Harmattan
1951 Daimler DB18 bought 1981 and run for a couple of years on a daily 20 mile commute to the railway station and for any other trip carrying more than one passenger since my other motor was a 1963 Lotus Elan S1.

1959 Ford 100E in 1980 after I wrote my Fiat 850 Sport Coupe off.
1930ish Standard in 1982 pulled from a hedge.
1950ish EB SPecial on E93A running gear in 1981

1961 Renault Dauphine, bought in 1989 when I was 20 and still got. Alas no longer runs but is getting restored slowly. SWMBO is constantly wanting to get rid of it - no way it's with me for life.

Much loved 1957 Beetle complete with semaphore indicators and no petrol guage. Paid £60 in 1982 from aircraft engineer who had installed an auxillary 12v battery under the back seat so it always started - had been round the clock twice from documents that came with it on the orginal engine!

1961 Series IIA Landrover bought in 1984 and the 1956 Bedford RL i own now have been both older than me.
Incidently the Range Rover i bought recently is a 1983 and cost me £500 , the lorry cost me £1500 and our newest aquisition is an M reg (1995) Ford escort and cost £150 , at this rate they will be giving new cars away.

As a student i bought a 1929 Riley 9 Monaco - magneto, fuel tank on front bulhead inside engine compartment, gravity feed, thermosyphon cooling, nickel plated radiator - and ran it for 9 months.
I then bought a more moden car - a 1947 Rover 16 - which although 20 years old provided comfortable and semi reliable transport for the rest of my university life. It had been reprayed in bprg and had a rebuilt engine courtesy of the one owner prior to me. I relined the brakes (literally new linings on old shoes), replaced kingpins and sorted the Luvax Bijuur automatic chassis lubrication system. Oil filter? What's' that?

Prices: £30 and £90 respectively...
But petrol was 15p per gallon..

My first car, a 1968 MG Midget purchased in 1979 for £350. I loved the car but it was horribly unreliable ? I should have been warned off by the fact that the seller threw in a boot full of spares. It still features in the occasional nightmare.
Wrote it off in 1980.

1964 Tatra when it was 33 years old, and happily commuted 75 miles a day in it.

1961 VW Beetle bought last year, just as a hobby though.

A 1949 Series III Humber Hawk bought from a motor auction in 1961 for £39 (3 months wages) when I was 17!

I bought my 1982 Ford Granada in 2004, which is in regular use during the better months of the year. I try to keep it off the wet salty roads where possible. Hopefully they will stop salting the roads circa early April!

Bought a 1983 Series III last year.

The oldest car I ever bought was a 15 year old R Type Bentley, in 1968, for £525, the price of a new Mini. Seemed like a good idea at the time, shameful episode really.

Next oldest was my first car, 1948 lhd Light 15 Citroen, in about 1962. £60, lasted about four months, great car.

I briefly owned, although it was given to me for nothing, a rather frightening mid-to-late 30s 6-cylinder 1.5 litre Fiat, in about 1960. That would have been perhaps 24 years old.

Nothing compared to some people here.

Have you still got the Tatra, garethj?

No, sold it to a chap who now races it in historic saloon car class. Replaced it with a 1992 Tatra though

One of those ugly ones... must still be full of character in the best sense though... there was a tatty one being used as a taxi in Prague a couple of years ago, never went in it.

Have you still got that one? Lucky man if so.

It's ugly, but it's semi mid engined V8 with fuel injection that learns your driving style and an aircooled V8 sounds like a 911 chasing a Mustang ;-)

The oldest was 5 years older than me. (Down Under this was a Morris 8/40 with canvas top and spare wheel at a ca. 60 degree angle on the back. Equivalent model probably existed in UK). On a favourable downhill incline once achieved around 60-65 mph.
Oz (as was)

1929 Lagonda 3-litre Special, high chassis (a rare bird, with probable racing history, called Tam, short for barbarous and Tamburlaine, that's a quotation from Marlowe by the way), bought in late fifties and used for regular trips between Glasgow and Dundee, passing most things, and conveying YL (young lady) here and there until hitched; said YL was apparently happy with it up until becoming XYL, when she started to moan about going too fast. So she's never been asked into Toad!
