I just received my second parking ticket from Stockport centre. The first time was when they introduced the street parking charges without telling anybody.
Today we parked on top of the shops, and walked down to the precinct. After a few minutes I remembered that I had to buy a ticket so I hurried back and bought one. When I got to the car with the ticket it was too late, I had a different kind of ticket. The warden must have been watching, because it can't have been more than a couple of minutes before he ticketted me. Did you know that the plastic folder is self adhesive, and sticks to wet glass ?
But, much more newsworthy, the BBC news tonight ran a story about a funeral at a church in Bury where the warden ticketted all of the mourners and the hearse too. The wardens are on bonus, so I think that he, or she, is drinking shorts tonight.

Before I write to dispute a ticket I caught the other night, has any legal expert an opinion on what constitutes the pedestrian walkway?

More specifically, on a short side street recently built up to pavement level all the way across, with ramps on and off it, is the mere presence of a yellow line a legal universally recognised division between the carriageway and the walkway, or is it (in the absence of a kerb) just a yellow line on the road (or pavement open to vehicles)?

These lice - I don't mean the poor ticket placers who are unenviable by any standard - ought to be argued with.

Not quite clear on the details of your query, Lud, but if it's of any help the parking restrictions in force as indicated by the lines will apply from the centre of the road as far as the boundary of any adjoining property as that is regarded as the highway. This means that, for instance, a double yellow would apply to any vehicle parked completely off the road on a verge or the pavement if not actually on private property. Learnt the hard way some years back when I was ticketed when parked on a very wide verge some 30 odd feet from the road!

Not sure if that helps with your query?

Subject to there being no signs giving temporary exemption from the rule, it is an offence to park either side of, or on top of, yellow lines.

Go to appeal on this - you will probably win. Tell them you had to go and get change to buy a ticket. Fight, fight, fight!

It may be unfair but ignorance is no defence, since Kirlees went private on the parking front revenues have skyrocketed.

Do as AS advises. Write in explaining you were ticketed twixt getting a ticket and posting in your car. You may hit someone with a heart.

You may also be lucky with the proof that your ticket was bought before the fine was issued (if you were returning to the car as the fine was put on your car) Both will have time stamps on them.

But supposing that is not true, what do we do then?

OK, my scenario....In the city where I work a side road where I park has just been resurfaced. There are now no yellow lines where there was once a single yellow line. Signs are non-existant too. Can I park there and not expect to receive a ticket or be towed away? I asked a traffic warden yesterday and she didnt seem to know. She exclaimed that I may be towed away and it would be my fault.

Why take the risk

Basically so I can save on paying for parking to be honest.

If there is no indication that parking is prohibited you can park. You may get a ticket but it cannot be enforced. In Leeds, when they were installing roadside parking bays, they burnt off the double yellows and left space for a couple of bays. They remained like this for a couple of weeks,no markings,no ticket machine.I took to parking there and after a while got a ticket.Disputed it,received a letter with waffle about it being a no parking zone but the fact that they dropped the charge told the truth.
