Intermittent fault. keeps cutting out. RPM up and down at idle. Any body any clues?

Might help if you mention which particular model of VW you're referring to.

not sure what model/engine you have but im guessing its a petrol, remove the intake pipe on your throttle body and clean the butterfly with carb cleaner and a rag,put the pipe back on and try,it will take sum cranking until the cleaner is burnt off

There is a very specific cause of that symptom on certain 1.4 engines. Is there some point to your reticence to reveal the model and exact engine type - preferably by engine code.
