My car was broken into last night, a 96-n Rover 414. They unsucessfully attempted to steal the original rover stereo and at the same time push the separate display into the dash. why bother stealing a 10 year old radio? Are these chavs stupid? Or is there some massive underground market for old radios?

Modern car security is much better, with deadlocks, unique fit stereos, identity matched to the vehicle's VIN etc, as well as fewer people wanting to change from the ususally decent factory fit wireless.
Your crook wanted something he could sell on for a fiver or so, and I guess there is still some market at this sort of price for DIN sized, easily decoded stereos.
A bag of heroin is now around £10. Your radio would have paid for a little bit of that need.

If they have a similar Rover for sale minus the radio or that radio has a problem,or they have no display or connection harness, stealing your set and display is cheaper than honest replacement methods. Don't also forget, that some will steal anything they think will change hands for money, however small a sum that is. Nine out of ten thiefs wouldn't have bothered...you just got the tenth!

I had a window smashed and they took the contents of my parking meter tray - £2 or £3.00 of loose change.
They were seen making off but the car reg was from a tractor
|
they smashed the small window on the rear door, £110 to replace and a whole day of removing centre console to refit radio display/clock.....if it was for drugs I hope they od!!! thank god i took my mp3 player from the glovebox, sometimes i leave it in there thinking that noone will bother breaking into this car.

What happened to alarm did it not go off, interior sensors would have sent it off?

sorry - couldn't resist

My brother got his old Nova broken into. They damaged the door lock with a screwdriver, but couldnt get in so smashed the window. Then found there was nothing valuable so they made off with some old cassettes, and his JACK!!!
I once got my car nicked and when I (unfortunately) got it back there were some computer keyboard keys in the boot, so it had been used as their un-traceable getaway wheels for the night.
|
Update: I actually lent my car to my father in law, went to see the car today. The scumbags opened the boot and glove box, couldnt find anything of any value or sucessfully remove the stereo so I have
smashed instrument panel
smashed clock/radio display
mashed up radio
screwdriver holes in passenger seat
smashed rear window
they must have leant on the front passenger door as this now snags on the rear door when closing.
My questions are:
should i bother reporting to the police?
can you replace the plastic cover on the instrument panel or do you have to replace the whole unit?
To say i am peeved is an understatement!

My Uncle had his factory fit radio from a Focus stolen three times in as many months from his locked compound in Swinton, Manchester. The police told him there was a roaring trade in stolen Focus radios to replace ones that had been previously stolen.
Enterprising scumbag thieves had created a totally self revolving marketplace...

Sorry I can't help you with your second question. A post in Technical Matters may help though.
As to reporting it to the Police is concerned - of course you must. It may seem that there is little you can achieve for your own good but the crime mustn't go unreported. If nothing else it'll add weight to the arguement for extra police resources in your area.
Also, it's not unknown for the theives to get caught.
On such crim in our area was traced by his DNA, he cut himself on the glass on entry and coughed up to that crime plus another. That too was drug related.

IIRC you have to replace whole unit, should be able to get one from breakers around £10/15,but beware of when changing-do as manual says due to airbag on steering wheel
