I've set myself a budget of £1500 (anything way under will do) for a car that fits these requirements:
- Must be pretty reliable.
- Easy to repair (spares easy to source, etc.).
- Have strong running gear so can handle poor roads.
- Not be a proper off-roader (i.e no landrovers, landcruisers), but be a 'normal' car (though having 4wd would be fine).
- Mid to largish size.
- Preferably not a 'glamourous' badge.
- Uses easy to get and cheap sized tyres.
- Not too prone to rust.

Any suggestions?

Volvo 2 series, cheap as chips and will take any abuse thrown at them.

I'd buy at £999 or less, and have some put by for repairs. I always buy at this level, but find that they can come with issues that do need sorting, which you are not going to do before selling at that price.

I'd second the Passat, esp. the estate, which has loads of rear leg/cargo space.

Don't suppose Peugeot 404/504/505 estate wd be available in decent condition for the money but any of those wd suit... not the 405 though.

Contrary to suggestions VWs are not reliable! At least that's my experience.

Think you should be turning Japanese here ... agree with Primera suggestion also how about the Almera or a Carina?

As suggested - any L/M/N reg Mk3 Vauxhall Cavalier and probably only £650 to £1,200 to buy. By 1994/1995 year it seems the cosmetically rusty rear arches were fixed.

cavalier - would tend to avoid the ECOTEC engines.

To echo the Carina E, a friend has an 'N' plated (1.8 litre, I think) example purchased second hand. Now on 150,000 miles, it never, ever, goes wrong. Puts petrol in and drives until the next scheduled service. The gearbox is now a little "worn bearingy" to listen to but still slots in nicely and the burgundy paint on this car that sits outside in all weathers is now pink, but that's it. He thinks nothing about taking jaunts to his native Poland and back in it, laden to the gunwales.

volvo 940 2.0litre would do you very well, should be able to buy a good one for £1000 ,loads of room in saloon, cheap parts to be had (if you need anything other than service parts)very comfortable and better safety standards on older models than most cars of similar age

I choose my cars on similar lines, and currently own a 1999 Primera, which I highly recommend as do many here. I also agree with the suggestions of Mk3 Golf - although smaller, they are tough, basic cars, nicely finished, and appear easier than most to work on.

Suaru Legacy.

Should get a saloon from about 1995 - 1997 for that money. My only concern might be spares availability, although they are very tough, and reasonably simple given their age, size and 4WD system.

Tyres under £40 a corner for Kumhos from www.valuetyres.co.uk and other cheaper options also available.

Otherwise anything Japanese, mid-90s, repmobile - Mazda 626, Carina E, Primera, etc. would fit the bill. If you want cheap parts, look at the Mondeo too. I also like the Peugeot 406 and my last one gave me very cheap motoring but I put £700 into the current one in the first month, though nothing in the two months since thankfully.

Well of course anything at this price carries a significant degree of downside risk so careful selection of whatever is a potential purchase is going to be important. My 2p worth is to suggest a Mercedes W124. Tough as old boots, built like a tank and the diesels in particular have a reputation for longevity. Spares not too bad either. You can see some interesting looking ones on EBay as well.

Cheers MGs

£1200 will buy you a very good Primera 2.0i 5-door hatch.

These are very touch, don't usually rust, decent safety rating and easy to service (chain cam engine). Plus there are now lots of 'pattern' parts available at similar cost to parts for a Mondeo.

No brainer really,Primera or Carina, really can go on just about forever.

based on a sample of one, i.e. mine, I cannot endorse the golf mk3 for this spec. Corrosion issues, stuffed full of complex EMU & not really all that spacious. Oh, & the littlem darling has just sprung an oil leak after a long run. Doubtless more on this later..

Do post up what you go with & how it all goes-I'm shortly to be replacing a certain VW & would dearly like to know!

FWIW HJ himself banged on for yonks about how brill a Jetta he had was. Does anyone know (or HJ if you're reading this) if he ever found another non-focus car that was as good/even better?

No corrosion issues on mk3 golfs M reg onwards- Mine is a petrol model with 260k on the clock and nothing as ever gone wrong. You'll obviously always fall on duff ones- but if serviced on time since new, they tend to go on forever.

Volvo 940/850 saloon. Parts...Swedish and German autoparts. Tough as any thing going and will take anything you can throw at it. Observe clarkson hitting brick wall at 40 mph and the Volvo drove away after.

Had a Mk2 Jetta (1300 Formel E, gutless, but cheap to run) that was an insurance write off - and still ran fine - the boot floor was lightly creased when an actor luvvy rear-ended it. Boot was cavernous, cabin basic, but I couldn't fault it. With a bigger engine it'd be more fun to drive, but those VW engines are not very good on fuel.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far everyone, quite a response! To elaborate on my reasons for this type of car is that I thinking of sending one or two of them to Africa. The price of second hand cars out there is pretty steep, so even with the added cost of shipping, it should still work out a fair amount cheaper to buy one here and ship it.

The Japanese suggestions are the favourite so far, as most cars are Japanese out there. The reasons for not wanting a proper off-roader or a 'prestige' badge is that they tend to be targetted far more for theft. Although an off-roader would be more suited to a lot of the rougher roads. For day-to-day urban driving and travelling along major roads a normal car is fine. It's just the huge pot-holes you need to be careful with, hence the need for something with a robust suspension and easily replacable tyres!

I see lots of old Toyota,Nissan and Mazda vans being shipped out of Southampton to Africa,i understand that they are converted to minibus taxis.
Seems a good way to recycle old vehicles, but it does look odd when you see them parked up waiting to be loaded on a ship still with a local plumbers or carpenters signwriting on them.

I'd echo the Volvo suggestions, but stick to the older RWD designs.

A 740/940 with the 4 cylinder petrol engine is pretty much the definition of indestructable.

Plenty of choice, and you can be fairly sure it's been driven nicely and hasn't been mini-cabbing.
