hello there,
My mother is about to take delivery of a Renault grand scenic 2.0 petrol (136bhp) privégé. Is there a running in period for this car, or can she drive it as normal from new??
regards
Dan

Depends on what you mean by "normal"?
The basics are:-
1. Not to let the engine labour - especially when going up hills. Best to change down a couple of gears and use a few more revs than to let the engine struggle.
2. Don't rev the guts out of it.
3. Don't stick to the usual driving style, but vary it slightly so that the engine doesn't get used to being driven everywhere at the same rpm.
HJ's advice may also help.

Dave sums it up nicely IMO, could add not to let the engine labour especially when cold.

I agree DD sums it up nicely. If it helps, I've just taken delivery of a new petrol Zafira which is about the same size as a Grand Scenic and in addition to DD's tips, the driver's manual says don't use over 75% of the throttle travel for "running in" period of the first 600 miles - and don't do an emergency stop for the first 150 miles!!

and don't do an emergency stop for the first 150 miles!! That's a good one. I dear I'm going to smash into that car and I can't do an emergency stop because I'm running it in. AGGGHHHH.Crunch. I know what you mean, it just reads wrongly. 'Made I Laugh.' !! Regards Peter

The most vital point about running-in is that it ISN'T done on synthetic oil. It's the use of synthetics during the first 500 miles that's causing all the recent cases of excess oil consumption. If the oil-control rings haven't bedded-in by 500 miles, then they never will.

Made me laugh too! In fairness to Vauxhall they say do not brake "unnecessarily hard" for the first 150 miles.
The Zafira has done about 1300 miles now and used about a quarter of a litre of oil in the first 600 miles and nothing since so I guess I ran it in OK.

When she gets it, have a quick flick through the handbook. The manufacturers instructions should be quite clear. Anyway, they're pretty much all the same and very similar to whats been posted here.
