Whilst doing a job on my 1996 Fiesta the other day I noticed a pressure switch (like a brake pedal / light switch) above the clutch pedal. I looked in my Haines manual and it says it is a clutch position switch, but doesn't say what it does. Could anyone elighten me as to what this little bit of kit is for please? TIA.

never heard of it.what else does the good bible say about it?

It's connected to the engine-management ECU and tells it that you've got your foot on the clutch. The programming takes that factor into account in it's fuelling decisions; things like imposing a 4000 rev limit in case you miss a gear, increasing the idle speed ready to take up drive - that sort of thing.
All the pedals are ECU-linked on many current systems. Accelerator, brake and clutch pedal-position sensors feed info into the common CAN-BUS so that every ECU [up to 30-odd] that needs to can make of it what it will. Even the steering angle and rate at which you turn it is monitored. Big Brother was just a mildly-interested beginner compared to a modern car. [And as for botty-sensors...]

It was taken off later Fiestas but the Ford EECIV/V modules are the the most powerful(in electronic terms)modules fitted to any cars in the world.Remember the same basic module camm the US.

Wow thanks everyone, I had no idea my Fiesta was so clever! I didn't know it had an ECU, I thought they didn't come in until later on. Thanks again. Mark.

The Fiesta has had an ECU since 1989.
A lot of cars have clutch switches, pretty common these days. I'm glad Ford have started to realise the pointlessness of them though! An ECU will be able to work out if the clutch was depressed by the load and acceleration of the engine.

The Fiesta had ECU's before that but not EEC;the previous ones were ESC.Some Fords now use Siemens modules which are less powerful and cheaper than EECIV/V.They had EEC before 1989 but not in the UK.

As jc2 says, the Mk3 Fiesta was launched with HCS engines is various guises. The ESC units were given a 'wasted spark' distributorless ignition system (a tradition which Ford thankfully still follows today) and Weber carburettors. The EEC IV was given the CFi unit and ECU. More stringent emission regulations in other countries meant the latter became common on foreign Fiestas before those in the UK.
