Diesel Engine Oil for my pug 306 HDi - mss1tw
I change the oil in my HDi every 6k - with such a frequent change, do you think it is safe to use normal petrol 5w/40 oil? The Total Quartz stuff is £29.99 for 5 litres! Even Halfords stuff is the same price..

I was always under the impression that diesel oil had more detergents in it to help cope with the extra soot etc that diesels produce during combustion. Other than that, there are very little (or no) differences between the two. Although not an oil expert by any stretch, I personally wouldn't, but I?m sure there have been instances on here where people have put petrol oil in a diesel, and more knowledgeable people have said just to leave it in. Sorry, I don't think this is clarifying anything...

Most oils these days meet both the diesel and petrol specs - check the oil does. The fully synthetic is specified for the HDi engine (along with a high capacity filter) to meet the 12k oil change intervals. The (early!) HDIs use the same bottom end as the old XUDs, which were OK on 10W40 oil, so it might be OK - but not the HDi has a different valve actuation method, and the turbo is probably different. GSF do the Total Quartz 9000 for 16.50 + VAT if there's a branch near - and they also carry the proper Perflux filter for a lot less than your dealer. Buy a few things, and the postage pales into insignificance.

It's funny you say that - they are the reason for my post. They've put the price up to £26.

Why not use the correct oil and change every 12,000 miles?
Just asking...

IMHO, 12,000 miles on a turbo diesel between oil changes is based in the fiscal, not mechanical, realms of acceptability, unless most of your driving is cruising.

That description would lead me to think that 98002G is a VW engine oil - they're branded Quantum not Quartz and the reference to not using it in PD engines would also suggest that. As you describe your engine as an HDi I'm guessing you don't have a VW so something else might be suitable.

However the only other place I could find on the web selling it was roughly the same price.

You may be able to find another oil which matches the spec and is cheaper - do Vauxhall do one, their oils seem to be well regarded on here and are reasonably priced, especially if you can join their trade club.

Well spotted!! I can't believe I got the two mixed up!

A couple of people did mention Vauxhall oil when I asked a while back, but 5w/40 was recommended by a Pug techy and the manual so it looks like I'll just have to shut up and pay up!

How did you find that? It's not listed on the Peugeot 306 Fluid and Lubrication list.

But that's the right one - thanks a million!

Dunno, started with the Citroen search! The website is not always that great, sometimes pays to give them a ring if you can't find something. They also seem to have deals on oils sometimes if you go in, so you might get it cheaper.
