Dear all,
The other half is considering offloading her 318Ci, having been offered a Honda Accord.
Her 318Ci is an E46 (2000 on a V), in that kind of lilac colour, good condition all round, history, with 69k on the clock. No leather, but does have autochanger and climate. Looking around, I reckon to put it up for £8750. Sound reasonable?
The Accord is a 2000X 2.0 S model, red, with 64k. Friend's father is getting a new company car, gets to offlod this one. It's up for £3k. Good deal?
Ta in advance,
Alex.

Re the price on the honda- 3k sounds a good deal, i bought an x reg last year with 40k for 4.5k (also in red). If it has full service history and condition is good then i would go for it. Watch out for the oxygen sensor on these though, mine went recently and replacements are not cheap!

My parents have an R reg Accord they bought new. It has been regularly serviced by the Honda dealer and has now covered about 47,000 miles. To my knowledge they have had absolutely nothing go wrong with it.
It is a lovely car to drive and I would certainly recommend it. Just check your wife is happy with the size though.

From this statement, you are implying that the BMW is not a decent car to drive, which is far removed from reality.
Hondas have a deserved reputation for reliability and would be the only basis (apart from the huge cost saving), on which to justify switching away from the BMW.

How on earth do you come to that conclusion? He never mentioned the BM

Eh? The only thing far from reality is that leap in logic! As JH says, he never mentions the BMW...

modern beemers great to drive in any conditions, are the ultimate driving machine - provided you know how to drive.

I know which one I'd rather be driving on a wet winding road (or roundabout) in the middle of winter when I'm tired after a long day and it wouldn't be the the BM! (even with traction control) Don't believe the advertising men, after all, almost every IS as reliable ,or even more so, than a VW too!
3K for the Honda is a bargain. They are great cars without being overhyped; they are reliable, cheap AND drive very well, I'm sure she'll be pleased. They have an old man image in this country but are regarded as sporty in the rest of the world.

Spot on there. When i bought mine i was very pleased with performance and the smoothness of the engine in general, but it was the handling and ride which really got my attention. It feels perfectly balanced all the time.
Perhaps not as obviously good to drive as a BMW, but there really isn't much in it and they are tremendous value for money.

Thanks for the responses, guys. We will certainly have a look at the Honda- she just has to like it now (I certainly have my fingers crossed)!!
It does astonish me that the price difference is so large- about £5k- between two quite similar cars.
Does the price for the BMW look right?
Cheers,
Alex.

I think OP's wife will find it easy to drive and that was what was meant by my comment.
As an aside I have not driven a BMW for donkey's years since my Father bought a new 2002 tii. This is the only car I have ever managed to slip the rear first to the left and then the right and luckily not touch anything. Hopefully BMW's roadholding has improved substantially since then. Personally I consider BMW's over rated and over priced, besides being driven by too many lunatics who think they own the road. Sorry Dude, but that is my opinion and why I did not mention BMW's in my first post.

Roger - no problems, IMHO the early Accords had over assisted power steering with limited feedback, but thankfully these problems have been largely addressed with the latest model, which is a fine all rounder and is on my shortlist come replacement time.
I would concur with Nick that the Suburu Impreza WRX must rank as probably the ultimate handling car currently available and would lose a 911 turbo on a twisty B road.!!!!

"I have not driven a BMW for donkey's years"
"I consider BMW's over rated and over priced"
How can you know the second given the first?
When I stepped out of my FWD repmobile into my boss's 323i (E36), I couldn't believe the difference! (Cars were the same age.)
I now choose to drive a Lexus rather than a BM, but would never claim the latter are other than excellent cars.

Well said peterb - it is beyond my comprehension that ill informed statements are made on this forum without basing them on direct personal experience, which unfortunately IMHO add nothing constructive to the discussion.!!!!!!
