Odd post I know but I know you guys will be able to help me.

I was watching Police Camera Action last night from around the early 90s.

The cops were chasing someone and had a Senator, a Range Rover and another big car which rang a faint bell and brought an odd memory back to me.

Trouble is, I can't remember for the life of me what they were. I have an inkling it was sold under the Opel name - I'm 90% sure it's either a Vauxhall or an Opel.

The back lights were like a bar and were a lot more square than those of the Senator and had a look of a) an American car and b) an old Cavalier. I'm afraid that's all I can give you.

If you said the name, chances are I'd know it.

Any help please?

Would this be it?

Sorry if I'm showing you a Carlton and you're horrified at something so obvious, but I can't think of another big Vauxhall of the era.

Opels weren't sold in this country after 1984, when the Monza and Senator A www.youngtimer-portal.de/senator.htm were rebadged as Vauxhalls, the remainder of the Opel range (Kadett, Rekord, etc.) having been discontinued in late 82/early 83 as they were just rebadged Astras and Cavaliers to no useful purpose.

Oh and if you want some English language links (but the pics aren't as good) www.autobahnstormers.co.uk

Definitely not a Carlton David.

HOWEVER, I am horrified to learn it was something as obvious as the Senator! ;-) The Senator A that is. I didn't realise there was more than one and assumed the latter one was in fact the only one.

I only saw the back of it on the TV but from what I can see of the rear lights in your picture of the Senator A, it looks like that's the one.

Hearty thanks for solving that for me. It was annoying me a lot!Virtual pint for you.

Cheers,

Adam

Vauxhall Royale (i.e rebadged Senator)?

Sorry for being so stupid. It definitely was the first Senator;

They're the lights I saw.

The other Senator in the chase was what I guess you'd call the Senator B (and the one I previously thought was the only one;

Thanks for everyone's help. I can rest now!

Monza.

Monza.

Underrated! I don't think the police used them though

Wasn't the Monza the coupe version, not the saloon?

From what I?ve read, they were initially sold here as Vauxhall Royals before being changed to Opal and then back to Vauxhall. In any case, rare as hens teeth. Only 7119 produced according to "Classics and Sports cars A-Z of cars of the 80s".

Incidentally, I bet you were watching the "Police, Camera, Action night" on Men and Motors?!?.

As it happens - yes I was!

It was weird seeing all the older cars but almost brand new at the time!

Yeah - the cop car was definitely a long saloon. I've been looking at Vauxhalls/Opels of the 80's and it doesn't half bring back some memories!

The sound those cars made when they floored them though. I'm amazed the sound quality was so good on nearly 15 year old film recorded from a small camera in a Police car though.

Yes, sold as the Vauxhall Royale Coupe from 78 onward and then the Opel Monza until the Senator B came in 87 when it was dropped.

Did anyone see the dash across London with a transplant organ on Police, Camera, Action?

Must have been mid-late 80's, with the old rover 3500 police cars. It was fascinating to see the traffic flow in those days, and the moment when one of the police outriders bikes gave up the ghost!!!

Yep - I was thinking specifically of them when I made my engine noise comment.

Made me laugh how they were going so quick and the lead (and tail for all I know) driver still managed a cursory "thanks" wave to the cops stopping the traffic.

Amazing how they did it in so short a space of time.

It couldn't happen today, though, could it?? Can you imagine the chaos closing the stretches of road that they did.

I missed the last bit, did the kidney reach its patient in time??

Oh, and I also liked the wave to the guys doing the marshalling!!

They got there at something like 23 minutes past 12 I think. (They needed to be there for half past).

Either way - the woman survived as Alastair Stewart showed her the video "for the first time" apparently.

I'm ashamed to say, I was sitting up leaning forward in places trying to get them to go quicker or swerve here and dodge there! Quite gripping.

It was certainly entertaining, I was at the edge of my seat shouting 'get out of the way you idiot' when the police car couldn't get through!! I can just about remember those rover police cars - I had one as a scalectric car about 18 years ago!

They could release the film as a dvd!!

I remember my neighbour buying one years ago (we're talking about 10 years) and it was immaculate. A lot bigger than you realise too when you stand up close to them.

On this subject, are there any good websites on Police cars of the past?
