Spill back pipes. - Anglesey Ian
Hi all,

Please forgive my ignorance, but had my 2001 (60K miles) 9.3 TiD serviced the other day at a Saab Specialist (who I trust)and he advised that I should probably consider having the 'spill back pipes'changed at the next service. It had been a bit slow to start during the recent cold weather and he recommended a change of battery (which I did). It's now super, duper, smashing !

Now never having heard of these until the above, could more knowledgeable backroom aficianados please advise:

What do they do/their function ?

Is it wise to have them changed periodically ?

If they were failing (or had failed) what would be the presenting symptoms ?

Do I have to do anything to preserve them ?

Are we talking a lot of money to change ?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

Spill back pipes - Saab 2.2 Tid - Roly93
The dealer on this occasion is giving you reasonable advice.
The spill-back pipes are the tiny rubber pipes that allow excess fuel from each injector (the 2.2 TID is a traditional direct injector design) to drain back to the fuel tank. It is a known anomaly on these engines, (fitted to Vectra's Omegas also, for these pipes to perish over the years and 'heat cycles' causing potential air leaks in the fuel system and thus causing slow/difficult starting problems to develop.
The cost of replacing these pipes is negligible and the labour should be 1 hour tops.

First things first, you trust this guy, he's a saab specialist and your car is now super duper. Keep your faith in him!! I think these engines are GM derived, if so they suffer from this problem, along with T-pieces (pennies), and sometimes injector washers & o-rings need replacing, the parts are relatively inexpensive, but can be quite labour intensive.

I am greatly appreciative for your speedy responses. Thank you.

Yep, I do trust this garage. For example, H/Duty battery (own brand) at a national chain wanted £79 to suit my car and its demands. He replaced the battery and charged me £60 for a Bosch brand which I felt was acceptable. He also undercut the local accredited Saab service garage for this fairly major service by £80

TY again

Saab 9.3 TiD: Thank you/thank You - Anglesey Ian
All,

Just a brief line to expresss thanks to backroomers for past advice. Problem now resolved !

I had been advised (via another thread) some time ago that poor starting could be attributed to a well known problem on this 2171cc engine (Reg Feb 2001 - 65k): that of failing 'spillback pipes'.

Not knowing what these were, I posted and gratefully received appropriate and informed advice. My car became gradually worse at starting after having been stood overnight and so I took it in to my local (non Saab) garage who replaced said pipes and charged me a very reasonable £25 + VAT.

What a transformation: instant starting and improvements also in other unexpected areas: ie loss of slight hesitation on acceleration. Instant fix seemingly.

This is to advise others who may be experiencing this problem

Diolch/Thank you

A paragon of a garage! Others with similar symptoms seem to have been advised to change the turbo!
