Just had phone call from distressed Passat owner - he has had a flat battery, replaced it, and now car idles very roughly.
(I suspect this is immediately after replacing battery and he hasn't actually driven far)
Any ideas - he had some idea of ECU's 'losing' settings and having to re-learn them, but surely the idle setting is the idle setting ?
Go on, get out of the car...

Mike,
In my manual when you've reset the ECU it tells you to leave the engine idling for a period of time. I can't remember how long it was but enough for me to go back into the house. Then drive it for a while.
Maybe it's worth pulling the ECU fuse and replacing it to try that instead unless anyone can come up with anything better?

Adam - I new somebody had been muttering about ecu's relearning stuff. I told him to go and give it a blat down the motorway, but whether he has done or not, I don't know
cheers

I've had the same thing. You need to reset the Throttle Body Adaptation. I used VAG-COM. The software can be downloaded for free but you need to get the cable to go with it - got mine off ebay for £25.
